Stumbled Upon #002 – Astrid (Brisbane)

In our new series “Stumbled Upon”, we get to know a new Australian band we’ve stumbled across. In the second installment, we meet Brisbane’s soulful Astrid, who talks about her love of great female singer/songwriters and gives us a taste of some new music…

What music or artists inspired you?
I love me a great female singer/songwriter: Sia, Kimbra, Nai Palm, Laura Mvula… they’re all such fierce musicians!! I’m also a real sucker for lyrics, sometimes I just read lyrics online without the music in the background so I can absorb what the writer was actually saying. People like Joni Mitchell, Paul Kelly or Nick Cave are great for this.

How did you get started?
I spent a few years writing songs for bands, which was really fun, but required a lot of time explaining my musical ideas to other musicians. Then I had an epiphany this year that if I have all the ideas inside of me, it was quicker if I just found a way to perform the music myself! So I bought a sweet loop pedal and have spent 2014 working out how to be my own band 🙂

How would you best describe your live show:
Vocal loops for days! Layers, people.

What shows do you have coming up?
I’m totally singing onstage with the Rolling Stones on Tuesday 18th. The thought blows my mind constantly. As for my solo shows – I’ve only got one left for the year! December 19th at The Triffid (sweet new venue in Bris) supporting the indefatigable, Bec Laughton.

Tell us about your latest release:
I’m looking at releasing my first EP as a solo artist early in 2015 and I actually can’t wait. I’ve worked with some amazing musicians for this project, and finally feel like I’m making the kind of music that I really want to listen to! I’ve definitely gone further down the soul-music path than any of my previous releases and it feels gooooood.

Just because I love the AU Review so much though, I’ve spliced together a couple of sneaky previews of some tracks from my EP. They’re still in demo mode, but I’m too excited not to share something. Can’t wait to share them in full in a couple of months 🙂 Enjoy!

Where can I get your music?
Before my 2015 EP release you’ll have to keep an eye out on my website and Facebook as I will post loads of updates, previews, and eventually the EP! Woooooo!!! Otherwise, catch me at my show on December 19th! 🙂
