What music or artists inspired you?
Some of Zoe’s favourite musicians are Damien Rice, and the Dixie Chicks… (Shhhhhhh, don’t tell anyone)…. Folk (and somewhat country) music are a strong influencers in how Zoe crafts melodies and harmonies. There is often a timeless beautify in those genre’s which aren’t always carried over into the electronic/indie pop area. More recent influences span genres… for both Zoe and Andy are Florence and the Machine, Movement, SBTRKT, lykke Li, Radiohead, The Jezabels, Portishead, Major Lazer.
How did the band get started?
Uni friends from the same degree, Zoe and Andrew began their career together making folk music, but after a brief stint in Sweden, Gault returned with the ambition to find a place where drums could exist comfortably amongst “beautiful music”. The result was Ginger and Drum.
How would you best describe your live show:
G&D live embodies a hauntingly beautiful sense of restrained power, until that valve releases.
What shows do you have coming up?
Keep an eye on Facebook for more dates.
Tell us about your latest release:
Our latest release is called Ticking Boxes along with a music video shot by NYC creative from warloud.com.
The song explores the point of view of an unsure lover who is confused by a lack of connection with a significant other. On paper the relationship seems as though it should work perfectly, however in reality there is a sense of ‘numb’ from both parties.
The song is a reflection of Ginger and Drum’s ability to carry emotion through their music without making it an overwhelming focal point. There is a subtlety and beauty in how sensitivities are explored both lyrically and through melody.
The video, shot in NYC, mirrors this in an abstract way using otherworldly characters and location to create this world in which 2 numb individuals are feeling their way through their current relationship state.
