Melbourne psych-folk pop group Cold Hands Warm Heart are the latest local artists to be featured in our Stumbled Upon series! Finding each other through uni and other bands, the group is currently gearing up for a special show at the Gasometer Hotel to launch their new music video for “Nightfall”.

Members & their roles:
Travis: Compulsive phone toucher, art star, fashion killer, vegan, guitarist.
Georgia: The voice of reason, fashion killer, everyone’s favourite band member, bass and backing vocals, likes an occasional kanga banger.
Genevieve: Feeder/Cook, fashion killer, vegan, harpist, synth player and vocals.
Esala: Drummer, Classic 80’s vegetarian, Cook/Feeder, has the best record collection.
What music or artists inspired you?
Gen: Local instrumental ambient stuff at the moment, like Corin (Wave Systems), Sui Zhen (Female Basic), Nice Music Tape Series 1 ft. Joe Talia, Hyperborea, Fia Fiell, Sunmoonstar (Gymnasium Flower), Yffer (You Have Many Faces – Little Lakes). Old ambient stuff like Cluster (Sowiesoso); Eno and Fripp‘s Evening Star is my fave record at the mo, and Beyoncé‘s Lemonade too.
Georgia: I am listening to two Japanese bands – Kazoekirenai and Colloid, plus Cross Record from the US.
How did you get started?
Gen: I was playing solo stuff after my instrumental-ambient band with Esala, Guns For Saint Sebastian, fell apart. It always feels a bit lonely and boring playing by yourself. I found Travis whilst studying [a] music degre at NMIT (now Melbourne Polytechnic). He has great taste in everything including music and as well, he is an awesome practicing contemporary artist. Oh yeah, [and] the only other vegan at NMIT. A really competent jazz guitar player who uses his talents for good.
I started playing with Esala again after he joined indie US theatre company Four Larks and I followed into it. We also played in the amazing Prudence Rees Lees Band together. The whole band was full of members of my fave bands; check out her record on Special Award.
Georgia was a life saver; she and Travis have known each other for yonks and play as Yffer, this slow-core grunge minimalist band. We’d been playing without a bass player for a couple of years, then we found Yuko Kono (ex-My Pal Foot Foot) and then she had to move back to Japan. We were devastated and really wanted to ask Georgia, but felt super shy about it. Then, she offered. She’s perfect. Keeps Travis and I in line with her quiet wisdom.
How would you best describe your live show?
We play a continuous song cycle that flows in a slow jam, psych-improv from one song to another, keeping that long tradition of psych and Kraut Rock bands we love from the 70’s. Saves me talking in between songs. It’s like theatre; you don’t want to break the spell. Pure escapism and pleasure.
What shows do you have coming up?
Gasometer Hotel on the 25th of August, launching our video by Melbourne art star, Zoe Scoglio, with our eclectically dreamy line up; Lucy Roleff, who also plays harp, will be playing her beautiful folk music with her killer band, HTML Flowers is artist/blogger Grant Gronewold‘s experimental rap project. He’s also one half of Brothers Hand Mirror with Oscar Key Sung. We won’t play the video on the night, so check out Zoe Scoglio’s amazing work beforehand!
Tell us about your latest release?
We release our first self-titled LP on vinyl in February this year, through Eastmint Records. It was recorded and produced by Joe Talia at his parents’ glorious property near the foot of the Cathedral Ranges. Go to your local record store and have a listen; we pressed it with MPO in France and we are super proud of it and the sound quality is amazing!
