The House of Vans at Mohawk’s has been a place of constant entertainment this week. Thursday night was no exception, with a massive night that concluded with Cold War Kids, getting ready to release their new record ??, and Local Natives, who are promoting their latest release Hummingbird, which is already being hailed as one of the best records of the year.
Cold War Kids were rocking out a mix of their latest tracks when I arrived, and though they didn’t extend this as far back as popular tracks like “Hang Me Out To Dry” (from at least the section of the set I witnessed), they made time for more recent singles such as “Skip The Charades”, and previews of their new record. The set was energetic, fun and showed that the band are ready to rock once more. No doubt that will include a trip to Australia. Their new record Dear Miss Lonelyhearts will be released in Australia on April 2nd, and from what I heard tonight is sounding pretty sweet!
Headlining the night were Local Natives, who focused their set, naturally, on their newly released record Hummingbird. The first single from the album, “Breakers”, which blew us away here at the AU when it was released back in January, was incredible live. They’ve made the transition from recording to the stage look impressively easy. Also included in the set were songs like “Airplanes”, “World News”, “Who Knows Who Cares”, and set closer “Sun Hands” which catapulted them into the blogosphere in the first place back in 2010, in which the band, to put it simply, rocked the fuck out.
It was a perfect end to a great set. The band will be touring Australia in May.
