The tail end of the film year is always filled with a healthy mix of blockbusters for the holiday season, and the Oscar-ready arthouse films that are waiting for your critical approval. Here now are the ten films we can’t wait for, and we’ll start out with a film that we don’t have to! It opens tomorrow…
10. Ruby Sparks
Opening tomorrow, this film reminds us a bit of the Will Ferrell standout Stranger Than Fiction. Here, a young writer played by Paul Dano starts writing a story about the girl of his dreams, who through his words he slowly falls in love with. Then she shows up at his house, and everything he writes about her becomes a reality. One of those “dream” concepts that will surely ignite the imagination of all who view it, as we are transported into what will no doubt be one of the strangest love stories this side of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or, indeed, Stranger Than Fiction.

9. Frankenweenie
Tim Burton’s classic 1984 short film is being brought to the big screen in a stop animation version and I can’t wait. I know I wish I could bring my dead pets back to life! Anything Burton, I hang to see. I love his visions, pictures and story lines. Always unique and always Burton. – Lyn Geisel

8. Looper
A man goes back in time to be killed by his younger self. What a ridiculous but awesome concept. And with a cast that includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who is making one great film after another at the moment) and Bruce Willis, I daresay we’re in for a heck of a ride.

7. Seven Psychopaths
Reuniting Colin Farrell with director Martin McDonagh, who last worked together on the cult hit In Bruges, would be enough to get me into the cinema. Throw in Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell, Tom Waits and more and you have a film which we’re unbelievably excited for. I don’t even care what it’s about. Dog kidnapping?

6. The Master
Paul Thomas Anderson directs a film starring Philip Seymour Hoffman with Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams which many are saying is based loosely on the formation of Scientology (although for understandable reasons the people behind the film are denying it…) – sign me up.

4. Killing Them Sofly
The new film from director Andrew Dominick (Chopper) stars Brad Pitt and is based on the 1974 novel Cogan’s Trade by George V. Higgins.

3. Skyfall
NEW BOND! How can you *not* be excited? The thing I love the most about Daniel Craig’s portrayal of the suave spy is that he comes across as more emotive and introspective. With all the new complications and conspiracies afoot this movie is sure to turn the paranoia notch up and really put Bond to the test. – Carina Nilma

2. Lawless
A depression-era crime drama about three bootlegging brothers who run into trouble, on both sides of the law. Written by Nick Cave and directed by John Hillcoat this will hopefully bring the kind of visceral violence and raw character emotion seen in the pair’s previous collaboration, the criminally unseen Australian film The Proposition. – Ben Cook

1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
As a massive fan of Peter Jackson’s LOTR Trilogy I have ridiculously high expectations for this movie and I’m pretty sure Jackson will deliver the goods. Martin Freeman is one of Britain’s most underrated actors and has only recently been getting the recognition he deserves courtesy of ‘Sherlock’. But the rest of the completely stellar lineup that will make up the company of Dwarves are also incredible and I can’t wait to see them in action. – Carina Nilma
I remember the excitement felt every time I would walk into a LOTR movie (well, the second and third ones) and the rare feeling of not wanting the epic movie to end. I have complete faith in Peter Jackson re-create the unmatched sense of adventure with The Hobbit. – Christopher Singh
