the AU BIGSOUND interview: She Rex (Brisbane)

Ahead of their BIGSOUND appearance, Sydney’s SHE REX let us in on what they’re up to at the moment, what the rest of the year will be holding, what we can expect from them at BIGSOUND and their love of Queens of the Stone Age.

Tell us what you’re up to at the moment… what are you promoting at BIGSOUND?

We’ve been busy busy busy with gigs and the release of our single P.O.W.E.R with it’s rad Film Clip by Blake Fraser!! We are just finishing up a 4 week residency at Oxford Arts Factory which has been crazy fun, and most importantly we are releasing our debut E.P in the weeks leading up to BIGSOUND! It’s been a while in the making, and had the magic touch of Tony Buchen as producer. We think it sounds pretty amazing…. We can say that right??

Have you played BIGSOUND before?

We are popping our BIGSOUND cherry!! And we can’t wait! This will be our first SHE REX adventure outside of N.S.W.

If you haven’t played BIGSOUND before – what have you heard about it and what are you expecting?

Nothing but positivity and fun and the opportunity to meet interesting new people. We are looking at this as a great chance to perform in front of people who have never seen us before, as well as people who can help us continue building the momentum and take our band to the next level. Our goal is to live and breathe music and make the full time SHE REX dream a reality. Oh, and a bunch of great stories that we can tell the grandkids if we make it that far.

What can crowds expect from your shows?

A shitload of energy and passion from four girls of varied musical backgrounds making unique sounds and wavelengths. Rock n Roll, Hip Hop, Blues, Synth vibes. Lots of Animal Print and Red Lips. Sultry, Dirty, Raw, Fierceness.

Are there any bands you’re looking forward to seeing perform?

Dune Rats, Gay Paris, Jones Jr, Elizabeth Rose, The New Brutalists. We wanna check out as much new goodness as we can and get inspired.

Any talks/speakers you’re looking forward to?

Um, NICK CAVE!! Nik Tropiano, Nathan Farrell, Cary Caldwell, and of course Billy Bragg.

What are three essential items for life on the road?

Coconuts, the book that you never have time to read (or write), and a sense of adventure.

What has been your favourite Australian album of the year so far and why?

I’d happily give Queens Of The Stone Age citizenship. Like Clockwork is the best album of the year for me. They can do no wrong. On home turf, we are digging The Preatures. Also Nai Palm and Hiatus Kaiyote are fucking mind blowingly sensational.

What will the rest of 2013 be holding for you? (Room to plug anything you need!)

The release of our E.P!! We are working on an East Coast Tour towards the end of the year so we’d better get used to life on the road. More gigs, more jams, new songs. We’d like to think that by the end of 2013 we’ll be touring the world with a personal masseuse named Sven but we haven’t found him yet. If you find him, there’s a band requiring his services.
