the AU interview: Adam Connelly of megastick fanfare (Sydney)

Ahead of his performance at Changing Lanes Festival in Sydney, we catch up with Adam Connelly of megastick fanfare.

Who are you and were might we know you from?

One of the several Adam’s from megastick fanfare, Connelly to be specific.

A story you’ve probably told far too often… but where do you come from?

We have all been friends for a long time and been playing music together for almost half that time. Danny and I started playing guitar together when we were about 15 and then with Shaun, Zwi and Sam. We just kept experimenting with different sounds and arrangements (there used to be a lot of instrument swapping) until we got where we are now I guess. We will hopefully keep experimenting and changing.

Changing Lanes Festival is all about supporting FBi. What does FBi Radio
mean to you?

FBI is like the caring older brother I never had. They played the first songs we ever recorded and have supported us ever since, as well as introducing us to countless bands and artists. I don’t know what would happen to Sydney music without them.

What can we expect from your performance at the festival?

We’ve had a little break since our album launches so expect the explosive release of built up tension.

What are YOU expecting from us / the audiences?

Bring a change in clothes. We don’t have expectations we just want people to do whatever will make them enjoy their day the most: dance, stand still, sing, leave. We do like it when people dance though.

Choose a band who’s also on the line-up that you like, and tell us why you like them.

Oscar and Martin are pretty great. Really like their album. Their r’n’b stuff is luscious in a melancholic kind of way.

Have you played a festival before or is this the first time? If not the
first time, what have your festival experiences been like in the past?

We have had really great and really terrible festival experiences. Good = playing outdoors, big energetic crowds, dancing children etc. bad = stolen wallets, broken down cars, exploding gas cookers etc.

What would be your #1 festival tip for a punter?

Start a band and get on the bill, you get in for free.

Your year highlight so far, as a musician?

Our album launch at FBI social was a lot of fun. lots of people turned up (too many to fit) and we had a great time. Actually finally releasing our album has to be the highlight.

What’s next for you/your band? (Opportunity to plug shit!)

We are about to do a tour with Oh Ye Denver Birds from Brisbane, which should be really good. Other wise we are recording and writing. Hopefully should have a new EP by the end of the year.
