Colin Moore is a singer-songwriter/folk rocker hailing from Canada. While over for the One Movement Festival in Perth (plus a few other shows across the country) we had a chat about his music, his song writing and Canadian music.
Welcome to Australia, looking forward to the tour?
Hell yah and the beach!!!!
You have played one show already, a showcase last night – how do you think that went?
Well our time slots were really early at 8:30 and really late at 12:15 so there wasn’t the best turn out but for the people who were there I believe they enjoyed it!!!?, I think?, Regardless we had a good time.
Who do you consider to be the main influences on your music?
I would have to say three artists Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Dylan!! those would be my main influences, amongst others.
How do you approach the songwriting process?
For me it really depends on the day and the song? Sometimes lyrics just come to me, and then I write the tune for it, then sometimes it’s the opposite? And then on the odd occasion I write both at the same time…? It’s never the same.
Where do your songs come from?
Personal experiences really! Life, love, loss, and of course PARTY!! Then sometimes I’ll bend the truth a little just to pimp out the story a bit. It’s really all about the story!! for me anyway.
Do you have any songs you like playing the most? and why?
Well my favourite song to play is “TIME” it’s not on my record but I like to play it anyways. I always play it first in my set for a couple reasons, first because I like it, second cause its one of those songs that has a perfect build up with vocals and harmonica that start off slow and smooth, but by the end both are pretty up there!!, and for me it kinda sets the stage for how the rest of my set will go.
How familiar are you with the other Canadian bands playing the festival/showcases?
Well Final Flash!!, I’m very familiar with because there on the same label as us (Indica Records) so we’ve played together before, they’re great guys, a little on the flip side, but that’s Final Flash!! Haha.
Elliott Brood I’ve heard many times and am a fan of! Luckily I was able to see them pull off 2 great sets at this fest!!! They’re a great band.
Matt Barber, another great singer songwriter never seen him live but I got the chance this time and he’s really great, hopefully I’ll do some more shows with him.
And as for The Trews I’ve heard them before but never met the boys!! Had the chance to hang with them in Cronulla for a couple days and they’re cool guys with great senses of humour!!! not to mention they fucking rock hard on a stage!! haha oh am I allowed to say fuck in this? haha sorry
Planning on heading to the festival yourself? Anyone you were looking forward to seeing?
Yeah we hung around went to a couple venues and saw a few bands!! Like Dead Letter Chorus – kick ass band with big harmonies!! And a couple other good bands!! Don’t remember all the names cause I was too busy drinking and having a good time hahaha. I was looking forward to seeing Dead Letter Chorus and got the chance they’re great!!
The Canadian music scene seems to be in demand at the moment, why do you think this is?
Not really sure why that is? I guess cause there’s a lot of good bands? not to mention our government tends to help out the bands with grants and extra money to support these tours so it’s easier to get us out and playing in different parts of the world, more affordable!!. It’s great!! I reckon Aussie bands would have a blast coming up to Canada too!!! Great for playing shows!! Good audiences, good beer, and crazy cheap!!!
What can audiences expect from your live shows?
Well I usually have a full band but on tours, but it’s hard to afford!!! So it’s just 2 of us me, and lead guitar player Ryan Battistuzzi, we’re an acoustic electric duo. We’ll be playing some songs from my album Leaving Home as well as new and old tunes.
We’ll start it off slow and smooth, and we usually will work our way up to some rocking tunes. So you could expect good ambiance listening tunes in the beginning and expect some loud crazy dirty songs by the end, basically 2 guys with double harmony vocals and good stories I guess? its folk rock but in a stripped down fashion.
