the AU interview at Peats Ridge: Toucan (Sydney)

We caught up with upcoming band Toucan at Peats Ridge Festival to talk about the festival, their EP Brave New World, and much more!

How is it going? Did you guys just wake up?

Nah, we didn’t just wake up. We just went to check out sound bands. To be honest none of us have had showers and we’re in the same clothes as yesterday. We’re wearing shoes so we’re pretty dressed up. I would probably feel too proper if I was showered properly

I guess we’re all just here to see some live music.

Very true, we all smell like horse poo, but it doesn’t matter because we all do. We’re only here to see bands, not smell good. Have you been checking out any bands?

Yeah, I saw Rufus yesterday. They were really good. Had a few tech problems, but they just ran with it which was good.

Yeah we saw that. We totally sympathise too, because we use computers as well.

Have you had any tech problems?

My microphone, the battery ran out. But that was cool, we just danced a bit more. We had a few but nothing major.

But the show did go on?

Yeah, we were really happy. The crowd was super fun. Everyone was dancing. It’s always really nice to see people appreciating your music and original music. That’s really hard to do. Our crowd probably started dancing from the second chord of our set until the end we were really shocked.

Whatever they were on, it worked.

Yeah, let’s just bottle it up and take it with us everywhere. It was a great vibe.

You’ve been playing a fair few shows lately.

Yeah, well this is our first festival and our 11th show. We’ve played in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. We’re just a baby band. So whatever happens in the next six months is going to be really exciting, you never know what’s around the corner.

Well it’s early days, but you do have your debut EP out “Brave New World”. What was the process of putting that together?

Shay and I record acoustically and then we workshop and then shay takes it into the digital world. It’s all self produced so we all get together to write and record. We had the artwork done by a girl in the UK Victoria. It was cool getting a little team together and making it happen. Getting the box with the cd’s was a nice feeling.

What have you got instore for 2012?

We just finished a big tour with The Kooks.

Not bad for your 12th show.

Yeah, it was a really big stage, we we’re so humbled by it. Going around Australia with bands, making original music for people, playing peats ridge. I would not have believe this last year. I probably would have laughed at the idea of it.

Well I hope you guys have a great 2012, you’ve got lots coming to you.

Yeah, have a great year too!
