the AU interview at SXSW: July Talk (Canada) discuss writing new songs and playing shows in Australia

the AU review caught up with Canadian bluesy garage rockers July Talk at SXSW in Austin to chat about writing songs for their second album, playing new material at SXSW and what they love about Australia’s music scene – all while holding our two balloons in the shape of an ‘A’ and ‘U’. We should frame that…

The last time we saw July Talk was at Brisbane’s premier industry event Bigsound, which was held in September 2014. the AU review editor Larry Health asked the group what they’ve been up to since leaving Australia. “Well it got really cold. We were really cold for a long time in North America. Right after Australia we did a tour of the states…and since then we’ve just been in the studio and we’ve been recording demos, working on album two,” singer Leah Fay said.

“Our goal is to just write as many song as possible so that when it is time to decide what makes the cut, we’ll have a good pool to choose from,” Fay continued. The band also mentioned that lucky fans would be hearing a taste of these new songs at SXSW as they road test ‘a couple’ of new songs.

The band then went on to talk about playing shows in Australia, with Peter Dreimanis saying: “It was such a great time…we’d never really been there so it was all five of us fully experiencing something we’d never done, and I think that after playing there our music really had a place there. It felt like it had a home in Australia. I feel like rock ‘n’ roll just flows out of there.”

And as for whether July Talk will return to Australia soon? “Hopefully we’ll be back as soon as possible! If anybody’s watching, keep telling your friends about the record and we’ll be back as soon as we possibly can.”
