the AU interview: Davey Lane (Melbourne) talks "Atonally Young"

Earlier today we premiered Davey Lane‘s new track “In The Light of the Sun”, taken off his forthcoming debut record Atonally Young. We talked to Davey about the single, the album and much more…

Today we got a taste of Atonally Young with “In The Light of the Sun”. How you feel this represents the feels of the rest of the record?

Well it’s probably unique in that it’s the closest the record gets to classic ‘60’s or even ‘90’s English songwriting. For example, I really like what I’ve heard of the DMA’s but I would get laughed outta the fuckin country if I made that same sort of music, so I try to curb the overt Lennon/Gallagher-isms….I still love that stuff though. The rest of the record, I dunno, it’s coherent in that it’s me singing and me writing but most songs are completely different to the ones that preceded it.

How long was the process for making the record and how far back do some of these songs go?

Most of these songs were written 3 or so months before recording. I went kinda batshit crazy and holed myself in my room and wrote about 50 songs. The oldest (She’s A Timebomb) goes back about 4 years, but generally they’re pretty fresh. The recording process was 9 days straight in the studio.

At what point do you consider an album “finished”?

When someone I trust with an objective opinion tells me to let it go. I can go round in circles for fuckin ever if I’m allowed to.

What was the experience like working with Tony Buchen on this project?

He’s an incredibly creative guy with a such a musical ear that’s sympathetic to my musical sensibilities. I love the guy as a friend and it was fun to work with him in this capacity. I’d love to do it again soon.

What can we expect from the upcoming tour musically?

Trying to convey the eclectic nature of the record live has kept us well on our toes. There’s no way we can replicate a lot of the production aspects live, but with me in control of my vocal sounds and with James on keyboards, we try to harness the technology available to us whilst maintaining a healthy distrust towards it. I try to imagine it like a band I love like The Replacements filtering a funk song or a psych frenzy or somesuch. Hopefully that comes across. I hate the thought of me singing my songs as myself so I imagine for certain songs I’m Andy Partridge or Syd Barrett or Blind Willie McTell or something like that. That gets processed through my stupid garbled brain and comes out like something altogether different I hope.

Who will you be taking on the road with you to form your live band?

Brett Wolfenden plays drums with me. We’ve been friends for 15 years and formed my old band The Pictures together. He’s one of the best rock ‘n roll drummers in the country and I’m very lucky to have him on board. Zac Crozier plays bass and brings the average age of the band down considerably. He’s a killer bass player and a sweetheart. James Fleming plays keys, he’s also in one of my favourite local bands Eagle And The Worm. The guy is a fucking wizard. I love him.

What are plans for Davey Lane beyond the tour?

I’ve been writing constantly since the record got made, so I wanna keep the ball rolling and make the next one soon. Same sort of indecision about what style I want to write in but I ain’t gonna stop it. The next batch of songs are weirder and will still have lots of chords. Pop songs with pretty melodies but awkward and jarring musical backing. Primed for the hit parade!
