Performing at the Toff in Town in Melbourne tomorrow night, Eliza Hull is celebrating the launch of her new single “Caught” and looking ahead to her debut full length record The Bones Of Us – due out in early 2015. I caught up with Eliza to talk about the show, the single, the album and more…
How did you come to work with Hayden Calnin (the producer on “Caught”) and what was it like working together?
I help run a music website Large Noises and the producer Charlotte Abroms is always amazing at finding new music, she emailed me one day and told me to listen to Hayden’s music. Instantly I fell in love, especially how unusual and out of the box ‘Summer’ was as a track. I then got Hayden to support one of my gigs, and we began to collaborate on a track titled ‘Ghosts’ which we co-wrote together. It was just an easy, enjoyable process working with him so I asked him to record and produce by sophomore EP ‘The Ghosts You Never Catch’ as well as my debut album ‘The Bones Of Us.’ I love working with Hayden.
Tell me a bit about how the themes around “Caught” came about… what’s the message behind the song?
I think a lot of people think that being ‘Caught’ in a relationship or being trapped for life can be a scary and at times negative thine. I think that notion had scared me for a while, but for the first time I had met someone where that didn’t scare me. It is a celebration of being caught.
How does this reflect what we can expect out of The Bones Of Us in 2015?
There are a couple of songs on the album that is slightly more upbeat like ‘Caught’ but there are also more slower, dreamy, ethereal tracks that are slightly more true to my sound. I am really happy with the mix of the two. I think overall the sound is definitely less melancholy.
How has it shaped up production wise? Are you working with Hayden on other tracks of the record? Who are you working with if not?
Yes Hayden Calnin produced the whole album. We did it quite quickly; the album was written, produced and recorded in months. I had Jonathan Steer (Ainslie Wills, Whitaker) put the final touches just recently and mix the whole album.
How do you feel you have grown as a musician and as a songwriter between your EP and LP…?
I wrote a lot of these songs on my own and really tried to push myself musically and melodically. I think you can tell. I guess as you progress in life, what you create mimics that also, so I think the subject matters are a little more adventurous as well.
Indeed, you’ve toured with a myriad of artists over the last 12 months… what have been some of the highlights for you.
I loved playing shows with Hayden in Sydney, they were great shows! Lots of fun! I also really enjoyed playing with SAFIA in Melbourne, what a great live band!
What can we expect from the show tomorrow? Will we get a taste of the new material?
Mostly all new songs! We have some special guests on stage and supports are from two amazing Melbourne artists Lanks & Texture Like Sun.
You’ve been collaborating with a lot of great artists – who would you LOVE to collaborate with one day?
Sia. I love her voice and her personality! I don’t know if I would get a note out though, I would too nervous!
What is in store for us between now and the release of the record? More touring? Another single?
Another single, this one is a duet and I am sooo excited to put it out!
Hopefully more shows, but this depends. I am actually pregnant and having a baby!!!! So that is also one of my big focuses right now! It will be an interesting balance but I intend to make it all possible!
