Currently on tour to celebrate her new single “The Good Life” we talk to Sydney producer Elizabeth Rose about the track, the tour, her recent trip to the USA for CMJ and more…
Welcome back to Australia! You played your first local show in a while at Alhambra over the weekend, how did the show go?
Thanks! Yeah the show went well – had a good crowd…though there was a bit of a strange incident as I started the set, a drunk German chick got up onstage and asked my keyboardist if we could ‘play some prodigy??’ err…no love – we ain’t dj’s, get off the stage….!! ha!
You’ve got quite a few shows coming up as part of your Good Life tour… what can we expect from the shows? We understand you’ve added an extra member to your performance?
Yep I have a keyboardist now! Yippee! You can also expect to hear brand new tracks! And a cheeky cover of my favourite 90’s dance track too….!
New York! What were your experiences like in that fine city from a cultural and, most importantly, food level? Share with us some highlights!
I loved New York so much – it was just constantly buzzing! There were so many things going on everywhere I walked day to day – outside the venue for my first show there was a Banksy piece being towed away…instant drama on my 2nd day in NY! The people there are also so friendly and open, confident. The food was great, a touch too unhealthy at times so it was a bit of an effort to go out and find fresh, healthy produce…but I didn’t have any troubles with that!
And, of course even more importantly, how did your performances at CMJ go?
They went well! I had a good response from each of the shows…people were dancing to the new songs I played and getting into it!
It’s not an easy event to play – running between venues with equipment, all that side of things – how did you find it in that respect?
Yeah that part was the downside – but, luckily our accom was literally 2 blocks down from Pianos on Ludlow st, we played 3 shows there so just ended walking the gear up the street to the venue!
Did you get to see any other bands while you were there? Any highlights?
Nah didn’t really get around to seeing much of the other acts – but one that I did see was Cashmere Cat and Jacques Greene at this club in Brooklyn called Babys Alright which was one of the final shows of CMJ! Cashmere Cat was amazing, he was reeeeally really cool!
Tell us a little about your experiences in LA, too! Food, culture… music!
Yeah LA was also great! I did some writing with Tokimonsta, Sinden & Viceroy whilst I was over there. My brother lives over there for his music so I stayed with him for the week up in the hollywood hills…so fancy! Everyday I walked his dog Zach (you’ll see pics of him on my instagram, totally obsessed) around the streets in the hills and I saw where Kathy Griffin lived and also Harrison Fords old house that he built himself! The food was good – In and Out Burger was my highlight…haha. I also had some damn good sushi at this Japanese restuarant that Jenny/Tokimonsta took me to on the day of our studio session..it was so fresh and authentic!
We understand you sat down with TOKiMONSTA while you were there? How did that come about and what did you guys get up to?
Yup! I supported her back in June at her show at the Basement in Syd and gave her my cd – and she liked my music and got in contact with me soon after that! We then organised to meet up for when I’d be in LA and yeah!
While you were jetting around the world, your new single was going gangbusters at home, what has the success of The Good Life – and the accolades that have followed – meant to you?
I am so thrilled with the response that everyone has given The Good Life – it was unexpected for me, so this just makes me feel over the moon to see it get this much love…feeling very humbled by it all.
Has it surprised you at all?
yep!
What do you have in store for us in 2014, and even to round out 2013, perhaps?
2014 brings the new EP! and working on an album too! More travel also…
