the AU interview: Jen Cloher of Storm in a Teacup (Australia)

One of the more unique events to hit the Australian touring circuit of late are the upcoming Storm in a Teacup shows. We chatted to one player of the event in advance of the tour, the lovely Jen Cloher. Head to the end of the article to find out more about what the event is all about!

How did you become a part of the “Storm in a Teacup” event?

I was kindly invited by Glenn Wright who runs Vitamin Records. I’ve collaborated with a lot of his artists either touring or songwriting so it’s a bit of a musical family for me.

What can we expect from your own music at the shows?

Some new songs for sure. I’ve been writing my third album this year so I’ll be trying a couple out on the night. I’ve also written a song with Emily from Tinpan Orange, a duet, which we’ll perfrom. It’s called ‘Bridesmaid 3am’ and it’s about those trashy nights after the wedding when you realise that even thought you caught the bouquet, you won’t be going home with Prince Charming.

How are the rehearsals going? I imagine your songs are being transformed quite a bit?

Rehearsals have been exciting, it’s been awhile since I played with a full band and I’m loving the throbbing engine room of Luke Watts (Husky) on drums and Alex Burkoy (Tinpan) on bass. Alex is a bit of a mad professor multi instrumentalist and is playing cello, violin, mandolin and bass for these shows.

This feels like a unique way to bring a new audience to your music – was this considered when you got involved, or did it simply sound like a great opportunity to perform with other artists?

It will definitely be a case of sharing our audiences, I think our fans will enjoy the whole night and that’s what it’s all about. Keeping your audience engaged and giving them something new.

What are some of your favourite songs of the other artists on the bill?

Well I’m starting to hear songs I’ve never heard before. Liz Martin ( our only Sydney songwriter on the bill) has a beautiful song called ‘Anthony’ she just sent through to me. Heartbreaker.

Husky’s ‘History’s Door’ has been a breakthrough song for the guys this year, it’s perfectly crafted folk and Husky has such a distinctive tone to his voice that sets him apart.

And I’m officially in love with Emily Lubitz’s voice. She could sing the pages of the telephone book and it would sound incredible. Emily has a new song from their as yet unreleased fourth album, it’s called ‘The Lonely People’ and it’s going to blow a few people away I suspect.

How would you define the title “Storm In A Teacup”?

Six massive egos, all crammed onto one stage. Ha ha! Only kidding… kind of.

Favourite tea? Or are you more a coffee drinker?

I’m an English Breakfast girl in the morning, a Peppermint tea at lunch, Tension Tamer in the afternoon and a Sleepy Time at night. I’m not kidding, I drink a shit load of tea.
