the AU interview: Jimmy from The Morrisons (Blue Mountains) talks the Lewisham Hotel Relaunch!

This coming Saturday (April 5th), the beloved Lewisham Hotel in Sydney is officially ‘back from the grave’! Under new management, punters are invited down to celebrate the relaunch of the hotel’s live music program, with this special event set to see performances from the likes of Front End Loader, Chase The Sun, The Lazys and The Morrisons. To get a peek into what we can be expecting from The Morrisons in particular, Jimmy from the band takes on some of the AU’s questions. Get to know the band on the page and in a live setting – make sure you head down to the Lewisham this weekend and show your support!

Who are we speaking to / what’s your role in the band?

My name is Jimmy and I sing and play mandolin in The Morrisons as well as writing a lot of the music.

What can we expect from your set at The Lewisham Hotel on the 5th of April?

Plenty of original tunes, fast picking, singing, drinking and dancing and lots of denim.

What does Rock n Roll mean to you?

As I live more in the country, folk and bluegrass world to me rock and roll is personified by people like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, the way they sang, what they wrote about and their character were about as rock and roll as it gets.

How important are venues like the Lewisham for the Sydney scene?

Well with out them the scene doesn’t exist. It’s great to be part of this event as it’s a positive story relating to music venues in Sydney. We hear a lot of negative stories about venues closing down and here is one that is reopening. This is what the music community in Sydney should focus on and support.

Tell us about your latest single…

We just recorded a new single which is still being mixed. No release date as yet but it will be accompanied by a film clip and hopefully be out in the middle of the year.

Tell us a little bit about the recording process. Where did you work on the track/album and who did you work with?

We recorded the single at Trackdown, which was a great experience, such an incredible studio. I think Justin Beiber recorded there. The guys at the studio there are very professional and have a real attention to detail, which was perfect for us as we all play acoustic instruments which require a bit of extra love and care to get the best sound when recording. They stuck our banjo player in another building as he was spilling over into all our microphones. It was quite pleasant not having him in the room actually I don’t usually have that luxury on stage.

Pick one other band on the lineup of this event and tell us a track you love by them, and why…

Chase the Sun are a great band. I was watching some of their YouTube clips in anticipation of the gig and found a live performance of a track called six feet under. It’s a real ball busting blues number with some great slide guitar playing and the band is kicking ass in the clip. Who wouldn’t like that?

What else will 2014 bring for your band?

We are supporting Lindi Ortega this month and are pleased to be on The National Folk Festival line-up in Canberra. All good things for 2014.

The relaunch of the Lewisham Hotel takes place from 8pm on the 5th of April. For tickets and more info, head to http://www.lewishamhotel.com.au/event/rock-roll-re-launch-party-saturday
