Returning to Australia next month for a performance at Sugar Mountain Festival in Melbourne alongside a few other shows, we catch up with Petey Dammit of San Francisco group Thee Oh Sees, to talk about their new record and more…
Let’s talk about your latest album release, Carrion Crawler/The Dream. Where did you record the record?
This record was recorded at The Hanger in Sacramento, California. It’s our go to spot where we’ve done albums like The Masters Bedroom, and Help.
Who did you work with on the record and how did they get involved?
We had Chris Woodhouse record and engineer the record. He is a genius and a gentleman. We’ve been friends with him for a long time and have no reason to use anyone else.
As arbitrary as the question always is, but what inspired the album?
The album is mainly inspired by old Dungeons and Dragons campaign books, and our love of puppys.
Your Australian / New Zealand tour kicks off in January, what can we expect in your live shows?
We try to bring all of our energy at every show, so hopefully you can expect a really good time!
What do you enjoy most about touring in Australia?
Servo pies!! Also the crowds, Australia has the best crowds that get really pumped and go crazy at the shows!
Any particular stories worth sharing from your last tour here?
I’m really excited to go back to Brisbane because our show last year was canceled due to the flooding. It was crazy going down to the river and watching the news on tv with all the footage of destruction. We ended up eating at a Chinese restaurant with a few kids who made it out to the club. I hope this year we have a great show to make it up to the kids!
You are also going to be playing at the Sugar Mountain Festival, what other acts are you excited to see perform?
I’m really excited to see Deerhoof again, I used to see them a lot in the early 2000’s, but it’s been quite a while.
Pitchfork ranked The Dream as #91 on their top tracks for 2011. What does an acclaim like this mean to the group?
It’s nice to hear, but it doesn’t really matter to us much I reckon. We’re happy to be on the list, but we are still gonna keep doing what we do for as long as we can no matter what acclaim we achieve.
What else is in store for Thee Oh Sees in 2012?
Heaps more touring, and releasing more records!
Any New Years Resolutions?
I would like to actually learn to cook instead of playing Cooking Mama on Nintendo Wii.
