Following the release of their debut self titled EP and the subsequent release tour, we caught up with Melbourne’s Texture Like Sun to find out a little more about them, their EP and the upcoming tour. The band will be playing a homecoming show at Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club on the 15th November.
Who do you consider to be your influences?
Jamie Lidell, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Bon Iver, Billy Joel.
Where did the name Texture Like Sun come from?
It’s a lyric I’ve always loved from the Stranglers song “Golden Brown” – classic
How would you describe your sound?
Which one?
Whats the story behind your debut EP?
It was created over quite a long period. The writing and tracking for it was done mainly in Melbourne’s Bounce County studios, though the initial tracking was done in Darwin (where the Producer/co writer was living at the time). It all came together quite recently.
How did those songs come about? any back story or significance to any of the tracks?
I don’t think any of it was supposed to come out quite so melancholy – There were more upbeat tracks that didn’t quite make the cut or fit the EP. There is defiantly a lot of love themes in there – love found, love lost. Its mostly storytelling though there is some biographical references throughout.
How did you approach the songwriting on the EP?
Its a co written Ep. Countbounce and myself have a songwriting formula that seems to work quite well. I find that a vocal melody comes to me before anything and its always the first thing I put down. The music seems to slot in to that afterwards with Countbounce adding a bridge here and a chorus there. Lyrically it was a joint effort between the two of us.
Your heading out on the road for a few album release shows with Patrick James, what can audiences who may be coming to hear you for the first time expect from the shows?
Heart-shaped balloons, matching vests and some mildly melancholy music.
Is the next step to release an album?
Yeah, It looks like mid 2013.
What does 2013 hold for Texture Like Sun?
……..Album, tour – learning how to use twitter.
