the AU interview: The Faults (Sydney)

We continue our chats with the latest Major Label signees, today chatting with Sydney duo The Faults. Though they’ve been making music for a while, they’ve only recently emerged onto the live scene. But they must be doing something right, with “Quarter” being sent around the country through the General Pants presented label. We chat to them about the song (which you can listen to below), the band, Sydney and more.

Tell us about yourselves… how did you form?

The two of us have known each other for ever! we formed after Oli impulse bought a guitar in New York would walk past Tom’s place on the way home from lessons, one thing led to to another and pregnancy- in a creative sense, ensued. We’re both at uni and working crappy jobs too!

You only recently started showing off your tunes live – what caused the delay for this side of things?

For ages we were doing a just for fun Jam thing, and constantly looking for bassist and singers and gigging dodgy shows like twice a year. Once we realised we were cool as a two piece things just kinda fell into place.

What have your experiences been like in the live Sydney scene to date?

Mixed, There are so many awesome people and awesome venues around, we wouldn’t have even gotten out first gig if people hadn’t actively pursued us. On the other hand there’s always the odd promoter or ego heavy band who have a stick so far up their hole they can taste it. Overall though, like 99% people who just like music, who are wicked fun and helpful!

Tell us about the track “Quarter” – what about it do you think attracted Major Label to it?

We think, or at least we hope, Quarter shows off the two piece format really well, plenty of space to listen to the drums and vox, but still with LOUD guitar. It’s fun to play, and people seem to dig the vocal hook!

What do you hope people who listen to it take away from it?

Half mast, a head ache?

How did the Major Label opportunity come knocking? Was there any hesitation when it did?

They found us and sent us an email! I think they saw it on a blog that we had convinced to post our music somehow. Contracts n’ stuff are scary but they are in it with the right attitude and have been super cool 100% of the way through.

Have any new opportunities come out of the Major Label deal? If not, anything you’d like to see happen?

press, press, press. Awesome to get our name out anywhere! …. Free jeans? (***cough cough)

What fellow Sydney bands have you been following in recent years?

There’s a dope garage/rock/surf kinda group of bands that we really dig. Betty Airs, Step Panther, The Ruminaters, The Nugs. ALL RAD.

You can listen to the single below, and purchase the track through Major Label HERE.
