As part of our series in the leadup to the Wollongong boutique festival The Farmer and the Owl this weekend, we catch up with Wollongong/Sydney outfit The Nuclear Family to find out a little more about them, and get a taste of what we can expect from them at the Saturday event!
Who are you and where are you from?
We are The Nuclear Family and we are from Wollongong/Sydney, Australia.
Tell us about your latest release(s), where we can find it and what we can expect from it!
Well we’ve got some stuff on our bandcamp http://thenuclearfamily.bandcamp.com/ which is our first EP titled SICK SAD WORLD. It’s sort of our debut/demo thing we made almost a year ago now. And we made a music video for the song Drown that’s on the internet if you want to see it.
If a single/album, where did you record and who did you work with?
We recorded in Jai’s house. Same thing with this new release we’re currently working on. We record in Jai’s lounge room and we recorded the last release both ourselves and with Jonathon Tooke who’s a pretty cool dude.
How do you and your band (where applicable) generally write your music? Is there a head songwriter, do you collab together etc?
With songwriting we mostly just collaborate together, Jai writes a lot of lyrics and stuff but we’re always working together and everyone’s got good and bad ideas.
What can we expect from your performance at Farmer and the Owl?
Expect loud, violent noise.
Who are you looking forward to seeing at the event?
Super keen to see The Drones! As well as shining bird of course – they just live around the corner from us and are really cool dudes.
How important are events like this to areas like Wollongong?
It’s really cool to see stuff like this happening in Wollongong. Hopefully more stuff like this goes on.
Talk us through some of your highlights from 2013!
Hmmm highlights… we played a really cool festival called Sounds Of The Suburbs in Cronulla and that was a blast, it was with our friends and stuff so it was so much fun. But we just love playing house shows and partying and stuff so there are lots of highlights haha..
What can we expect from you in 2014?
I guess you’ll have to wait and see…
