We caught up with Twin Shadow to have a chat about some new and upcoming material and touring.
Where are you at right now?
I’m in the studio right now in California, Los Angeles
So working on some new material for us?
Yeah, new material, it’s great
We got a little taste of some new material with the song ‘Changes’ you put out on the old website. I thank that was from separate sessions I imagine.
Yeah, but that was a while back now.
How is it going? How is the recording going?
It’s going good, just going at it every day.
I imagine it’s your only real free time, you start touring again pretty quickly again in the new year.
Yep, good stuff.
Well it’s not too bad, you get to come all the way down to Australia.
Yeah, I’m actually really excited about that. Never been and I’m glad that first time I’m coming is to play music.
Yeah well it’s going to be an interesting way to see the country, your dates are a little bit spread out. You’ve got a couple of days in Melbourne and a few days in Sydney by the looks of it.
Yeah, I’m excited about our days off.
So when it comes to the new material, can you say who are you working on the new record with?
I’m working with the keyboard player of Twin Shadow. I’m kind of producing it myself this time round.
Fair enough. Well I know a lot of the last year has been running around the world, playing Forget. I was lucky enough to get to see you perform at South By South West and it’s good that you’re already back in there working on some new material.
Yeah, I’m really happy that we’re working on it and I’m going to be there next year to do it. Should be good.
What was the experience like at South By earlier this you did a show in front of literally a riot in the park before The Strokes then you ran over to play the church not long after?
South By was insane. It was like bootcamp. We really were feeling like a young band, playing all our shows for the first time, playing all those crazy shows. We were lucky enough to play with The Strokes. We never really recovered from that week. It was a good experience as a band and shaped who we are as a band live in a big way.
Yeah, I only saw the gig in the church and you had Chris come out in the last song, and the acoustics were very special. It must have been a highlight of the year by the sounds of it.
Yeah, it was great. There has been many highlights
What have been some other highlights of the year? We are only a few days from the end of the year if you can believe it.
Lots of touring, all the festivals, we played before Kanye, and our Portugal shows were a really big highlight for us. So many, it’s hard to recall actually. It feels like we’ve been around the world twice. Europe twice, three times around America almost. There have been lots of highlights, San Francisco shows and our shows are obviously the highlights for us. Then there is the parties in between and most of our hotel shenanigans have been pretty fun.
I can certainly bet on it.
Shooting BB guns in hotels was pretty fun.
Have you been kicked out of any hotels or anything like that?
Certainly band members have been kicked out of pools, that’s for sure.
Well looking forward to next year, sounds like we’re going to get some new material from you. Can you give us a hint what to expect from the new record, or is it still too early days?
It’s still early days but you know you can expect a bit of a melting pot of the live show and the record. Somewhere in the middle of those two things is where the new record is going to be.
Looking forward to hearing that. Will you be performing some new material down in Australia, or again, still too early for that?
Definitely at least one song,. Maybe a couple, we’ll see what happens. If we can get enough of everything.
Well fair enough, hope to get to hear a little bit of a taste of the record. We look forward to seeing here for Laneway. When it comes to this new music video thing you’ve posted, can you tell me a little bit about that? You want someone in your music video. Can you tell me what you meant by that?
We went to a gay club and found this guy that was using this fan. He just blew my mind. We were just looking for him and were using our website to hunt him down.
Oh, I understand. You’re specifically looking for this one guy.
We weren’t doing a contest for everyone, but if you can use a fan like that, then sure you can be in the video if you want.
That’s what I thought you were going for maybe, you were looking for someone who can replicate the vibes of this dude.
No, we’re looking for that guy in particular actually. I think we’re on his tail actually, I think we know where he is.
