the AU interview: Vintage Trouble (California)

We caught up with Vintage Trouble after their Sydney Festival performances to chat about how to party, birthdays, new material and much more!

So you’re in Australia for the first time as a band. Have you been here previously?

We’ve been here, done the whole backpacking from Cairns to Byron Bay.

Have you been to Sydney before?

This is our first time as a band and as individuals. It’s so clean here, it’s almost like a dream America. Everyone seems so nice, well taken care of and friendly.

It’s a beautiful city. Have you been to Melbourne?

Not this time. We had to cancel a show there, but that means we’ll definitely be back. We’ll be back to Sydney in April. We hate disappointing people.

You’ve released your album in Australia officially. It’s been out in other places previously. But how have the shows for Sydney Festival going?

I don’t know if people are coming well dressed or wearing sun dresses but i’ve been seeing so many 50’s dresses and they’ve been dancing. It’s beautiful.

We’ve also added a new favourite venue to our top five list – The Famous Speilgel Tent. There are just some places in the world that are just so magical and that is definitely one of them. There is something so beautiful about it and yet dirty at the same time. It felt perfect playing under that chandleir.

I came along to your show on Saturday and one amazing thing about you as a band is your ability to get people up on their feet so early in the day. You have an auora about you that suggests that you’ve been doing this for a very long time. It’s amazing to watch. But where does that energy come from?

We like to party, we like to throw the party. We want people to be involved, shout back and sing and dance and be wild. That’s what we like to do and that’s what we like to see. It’s so much fun to play music that we want that to translate into our shows.

Are you working through more material throughout the rest of the year?

We have been fortunate to have that trailing along behind us. We were fortunate to have recorded at Abbey Road. We’ve got a bunch of songs that we’ve previously recorded that we’re just sort of sitting on, so it’s a case of putting it all together again. We’re looking forward to going back into a studio and putting that all together again. But we’re definitely more of a live band.

The other day you got to play at a special live birthday party with Paul Stanley.

Yeah, that was my birthday.

Oh! Happy Birthday!

Belated, but thank you. Yeah, playing that together was so much fun. We actually have the same band manager and we’ve kept in contact over the years. Little by little I slowly inched it out of Paul that we were actually on of his favourite bands. He actually came to one of our shows and brought the whole band of Kiss with him. It was really cool. After one show all these people were talking to us after and telling us what a great show it was and we would just say “Did you see Kiss on the balcony?!”

What a good way to kick off the year! So you mentioned that you have a lot of touring coming up and you’re playing South By South West which is always a lot of fun. This is your first year, right?

From what I’ve been told, and I hope it’s true but apparently we’re going to be playing a bit more at the hangouts. It’s a little overwhelming at the other places. I’m looking forward to it. Have you been there before?

Yeah, this will be my third year.

It’s amazing being in a place with so many creative minds around you. It makes you feel like you’re a part of something special.

Have you had much of a chance to travel around Sydney while you’ve been here?

We’ve been to the Opera House, seen the Habour, we went to the Picaso convention, I took a flying trapeze class. It’s been so much fun.

The band promise to return later this year! Stay tuned for details.
Their record The Bomb Shelter Sessions is in stores now.
