the AU interview – WAMi Festival 2010: Boys Boys Boys! (Perth)

boys-boys-boys-wami-interview

Fresh off the WAMi stage, I chatted to Bridget Turner (Guitar, Vocals, Synths), Jerico Wallace (Vocals, Synths) and Janelle Morse (Keys, Vocals, Bass) from the energetic and entertaining band Boys Boys Boys! We chatted about their recent successes, and eating a whole wheel of cheese.

So we’re sitting here in the Court just after your performance at the WAMi Saturday Spectacular – how did it go?

Bridget and Janelle: It was fun!

How many times have you done the festival now?

Bridget: Twice!

How is it shaping up this year compared to the others?

Bridget: I think this is the best year!

Janelle: It’s been really good. There have been lots of good speakers, too, from around the country and around the world.

Bridget: Jebadiah, man, headlining!

Are you going to head along and catch them tonight?

Bridget: Maybe, yeah!

So moving onto the band, how did this project come about?

Jerico: From a burger place! We all worked together in the kitchen, and we were bored one day and said – why don’t we write songs about boys, it’ll be great! And so we did! And then we added a few boys and that’s us!

There’s a big 90s party vibe to the band – where does the influence come from?

Janelle: Bridget’s love of all things 90s.

Bridget: I’m pretty much living and breathing the 90s right now *laughs*… and the 80s too, and the 60s. But the 70s are bad.

Jerico: Pop music’s the best! It’s so much fun. You play pop music and you just don’t care. You just want to have fun.

Speaking of fun, you’d had quite a lot of shows over the last six months – has it been pretty full on?

Bridget: Well the festival season was massive. We were really lucky, we played Laneway, Summerdayze … Parklife was the best day of my life, because I ate a whole wheel of cheese, to myself. Brie. The nice stuff. It was bigger than my head!

You ate a whole wheel of cheese!?

Bridget: I ate a whole wheel of cheese. It was the best day of my life. And it was free. I had like $40 worth of cheese. No shit!

Would that be the highlight of your musical career thus far?

Bridget: Oh, that’s hard.

Jerico: Parklife was probably my highlight, because I got to hang out with Lady Sovereign, and met La Roux and stuff.

Bridget: … and a whole wheel of cheese!

Jerico: Yeah, free food.

Bridget: I really liked Southbound actually.

Janelle: Yeah Southbound was pretty fun.

Bridget: I got a massage! Actually, festivals are just so fun! I just can’t believe it every time we get asked to play a festival, I just die with excitement. YEAH! CHEESE!!

You recently released your debut album Yes! How have you found it to be received so far?

Bridget: Well we released it last year, but then we were really lazy. So we didn’t service it very well. We got Inertia to distribute it, but then we never really pushed it. And we lost our guitarist, but replaced them with someone more awesome (Janelle).

Jerico: And our drummer went away to Europe for two months.

Bridget: So we had a bit of an inactive period, which was a bit annoying.

Jerico: It’s been better received this year than it was last year, which is good.

And I understand “Seeya Later Lovie”, the first single, was in 90210?

Bridget: Yeah, What was that about!?

Jerico: But I liked it!

Bridget: It wasn’t even the good quality version! We still got paid for it though! It was really cool though, and it was in a Vodaphone ad too.

Have you found extra exposure from that?

Bridget: Nah.

Jerico: My mum was pretty happy!

Now on stage you’re quite big on the syncronised dancing. How did you learn your killer moves?

Jerico: Britney Spears! I studied Britney and I know pretty much every move. So I got the inspiration from her. And S Club 7. Everywhere!

Janelle: There ain’t no party like an S Club party.

And so what’s next for Boys Boys Boys!?

All Three: Touring!

Bridget: We’re going to come to you! We’re going to Sydney, Melbourne and…

Janelle: Hobart!
