On the final leg of the last Australian tour for a while, we caught up with Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo himself to discuss the new sound we should expect from The Bloody Beetroots and much more…
How has the tour been so far?
It’s been pretty fun. I couldn’t imagine such a big tour for a DJ.
It’s quite the amazing light show and cannon’s in the air. What’s it like up on the stage when all that is going on?
I don’t have a perception of what’s happening in front, I look at the people. I try to feel the feeling. The concert was pretty huge. Especially Sydney, I was amazed to have sixty thousand people in front of me.
It’s not your first visit to Australia, in fact it’s your second this year.
Yeah, we did Big Day Out in January but it wasn’t the same. Now it The Bloody Beetroots are very different. We tried to make a new show for ourselves. It worked a lot for Breakout Festival but it’s very hard to make sixteen year olds dance, especially after LMFAO. I’m not so pop, I only have one pop song. I always try to do something really wild with my music so people aren’t always prepared to listen.
I’m trying to understand what’s going on with all the people on this tour. It seems that all the music in Australia is reaching a higher pop level, it’s getting really popular, more than rock and roll music. I’m trying to change my music to become broader so everyone can enjoy it.
Does that process every time you go to a new country? Do you change your set according to the country?
No, I always play a global DJ set for everybody. I understand a little bit what everyone’s taste is and what I like as a DJ. I try to push my songs on the internet so they can all recognise my songs so I can groove with them.
It’s very challenging, it’s cool, I love challenges. I always play ‘Warp’ just at the end, I don’t want to build an entire show up on one song so this way they can hear a whole set of my other songs.
Can you tell us a little bit about your new single ‘Church Of Noise’ and tell us what that is leading too next in the studio?
The new single is a result of working with Dennis Lyxzén for a year. We stayed together for a year and a half for a new style for The Bloody Beetroots. It was a great experience. It’s a beautiful song. The song opens a new vision on where the music for The Bloody Beetroots is going. I want to produce a very wide angle album.
What’s the plan for next year? Will we see you back in Australia?
No sure about that. I want to make new music. I’ve been touring forever. It’s been five years, The Bloody Beetroots need a new sound. You need to rebuild a new sound. It will become either very overrated or saturated. I’ll have some new singles out this year, but i probably won’t release a new album before October. I like to release my songs single by single.
Well I look forward to hearing the new material, I’m sure we’ll hear it at every club in Australia.
Well maybe not, depends on our new sound.
How is the coffee in Australia? How does it compare?
It’s horrible in Australia. I’m Italian, I can say this. It has a really bad taste, it’s bad. I really like espresso, this is terrible.
