Ahead of the final show on their Red Cape East Coast 2014 at Boney in Melbourne (November 8th), Brisbane’s Arundel are delivering an exclusive playlist to the AU review of their favourite music. Listen to it here thanks to Spotify and while you do, read what each band member chose and why!
Narcissus is Back – Christine and the Queens. (SIMON)
“There is a sexiness and bravado to Christine’s voice that just gets me. She could be singing about carpet. I wouldn’t care. Love the arrangement of this track too.”
Wildfire – SBTRKT ft Little Dragon (MARY)
“Love the twisting synth bass. If you can pull off writing a solid enough bassline, yes apparently you can get away with 3 mins of repetition. These guys do! Well, I dig it.”
Baby Carni Bird – Camille (DEAN)
“Although light on instruments, this track is so so rich in texture with all the layers of vocals. Amazing live show when I saw her with 10 vocalists and virtually no instruments.”
Eye For And Eye – UNKLE (LUCAS)
“After the album (‘Never, Never, Land’) begins with street poet Robert Alan Weiser’s monologue, Eye For An Eye kicks off with an awesome sample from the classic track “Ball of Confusion’ – busting into that hypnotic driving rhythm. This was pretty much my first taste of UNKLE (Simon introduced me) – and I was amazed to hear the ‘rockier’ side of James Lavelle’s creations – and how a live band can be mixed with production music so well. ”
Shoot – ME (SIMON)
“Bangin tune, turn it up to eleven.”
Happiness Is Easy – Talk Talk (LUCAS)
“The album (The Colour of Spring) produced in 1986, is one of the most fascinatingly-produced albums for the time. Listen in headphones – the piano, the random acoustic guitar stabs, the KIDS CHOIR. Wow! And Mark Hollis’ voice just gets me every time. ”
Half Asleep – School of Seven Bells (RICK)
“This track grabbed me right away when I first heard it. The meld of groove based electronic music with dreamy, almost synth like guitars ticks all my boxes. Can’t forget our tour buddies, No Body Died, who pull off the same vibe and sound beautifully!”
Open Eye Signal – Jon Hopkins (LUCAS)
“I’ve been a huge fan of Jon Hopkins’ more ambient work (particularly his work on the Monsters soundtrack), but when he dropped this glitchy, house-style track, my mind blew. There’s something human about it, and the groove is entrancing.”
Disco Volante (Sebastien Leger Remix) – Ida Engberg (MARY)
“The attention to layering detail in the production on this track is so solid. This is one of the first tracks to inspire me to write vocal bootlegs of dance tunes back in the mid 00s, so it holds a very special place in my heart.”
Journey to Reedham (7am Mix) – Squarepusher (DEAN)
“I wouldn’t call myself a Squarepusher fan but I’ve always found this track to be beautifully built around that one little sequence.”
