the AU review turned five years old earlier this month, and to celebrate, throughout the month of August we’re asking many of our music industry friends to help us look back on the last five years of music! Today we talk with Channel [V] presenter Marty Smiley about his five favourite albums of the last five years…
Ghostface Killah – Ghostdini: Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City
This is an rnb album that came out 10 years late. All I can say is, just listen to it. You’ll realize why the early 2000s rnb scene was so damn good. Ghostface, you’re a legend.
Drake – Thank Me Later
My obsession with Aubrey Graham Drake aka Drizzy began with this album. We blasted this in every car and at every house party I went to when this came out. A rapper with equal singing and rapping skills is what the world the needed and Drake provided.
Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago
Three months of ‘hibernation’ in a cabin in the woods and Justin Vernon came out with this album!? I have a lot of memories stored within this record and seeing it come to life at Golden Plains tied the knot on a long love affair with Bon Iver. By the time the album reaches The Wolves Act I & II, I’m gone. Complete surrender.
Lior – Corner of an Endless Road
He’s my favourite Australian artist and this is his best album.
Horrorshow – King Amongst Many
Some might say it’s a little too early to call but after flogging this album over the last month I can honestly say this is one of the best Australian Hip Hop releases ever. It’s definitely Horrorshow’s best offering. Solo never trivializes Australian culture, he tells our cities’ stories in truthful manner, his tone and voice control is comforting and his writing is complex and filled with vivid metaphors. We’ll be calling it a classic in no time.
