The State of Affairs (29th April 2016): Australian Indie Labels heading to New York, nominations for the NIMA’s are open & more!

This week in the music industry, AIR, Sounds Australia and PPCA have announced the 12 Australian independent record labels who will be attending the annual Indie Week conference in New York, applications for the National Indigenous Music Awards are open, Support Act to celebrate and honour Paul Kelly’s contributions to the industry and we bring you the weekly round up!

Australian Independent Labels To Attend Indie Week 2016, New York City

Yesterday, the Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR), Sounds Australia and the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA) announced that they will be leading a group of 12 Aussie independent record labels, to this year’s Indie Week conference.

Indie Week is an exclusive annual conference held in New York city, by the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM). The event gives various independent record labels from all over the world, the chance to come together and discuss the key issues concerning their industry, through a series of panel discussions and networking events.

AIR & Sounds Australia have been organising the Australian representatives for the Indie Week conference since 2013. This year, the number of Australian delegates set to attend the event has been increased to 12, instead of the usual 10.

The 2016 Aussie delegations include; ABC Music, Barely Dressed Records, Bedlam Records, Chugg Music, Cooking Vinyl Australia, Hillsong Music Australia, HopeStreet Recordings, Onelove Recordings Australia, Rice Is Nice Records, Solitaire Recordings, The A&R Department and Zero Through Nine.

Indie Week 2016 will be held at NY Marriott East Side, New York City, from 13-17th of June.

Nominations Now Open for This Year’s National Indigenous Music Awards

Nominations for this year’s National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMA) opens tomorrow and this is an opportunity for people part of the Indigenous Music Industry to be recognised for their excellence, dedication, innovation and outstanding contribution for their work.

The theme for this year’s NIMA is Protest Songs, due to the amount of milestones reached in the Indigenous World as of recent. Nominations for the general public will be available between July 2015 – June 2016.

Australian Indigenous solo artists and groups are eligible to apply. You can check out the general criteria HERE.

Nominations are now open and will close on June 17th, 2016.

Paul Kelly is set to be recognised and honoured for his services and contributions to the Australian music community at Support Act’s ‘Music in the House’ event in Sydney next month. The ceremony, taking place at The Ivy Ballroom on May 18th, will see Kelly awarded the special charity award, while artists Julia Stone, Thelma Plum and Urthboy have been confirmed (alongside Kelly himself) to perform.

Tickets for ‘Music in the House’ can be purchased here, at $180.00 a head. The ticket price includes a two course meal, drinks and coffee, not to mention the featured live performances above. Tickets will not be available on the day, so if you’re keen to get along, you can book in advance until 5pm, May 17th.

Singer/songwriter Gordi has signed on to Liberation Music, and released a new lead single from her debut EP Clever Disguise, due on 13th of May 2016.  

Metroplane, the new collaborative project by Alex Metric and Aeroplane, has signed on to Sydney-based label, Sweat It Out.  Their debut EP Metroplane is due on 13th of May 2016.

Non-profit Melbourne radio station PBS 106.7FM are calling for people to signup or renew their memberships during their Take the Plunge radio festival, held from 16-29th of May 2016.

After a successful debut last year, Australian Music Week will return to Sydney in November 2016, to showcase Australia’s best up and coming musicians and get them in touch with industry experts. Talent application forms and ticket information can be found HERE.

Starting from 5th of May 2016, every Thursday evening, MTV Upload will be giving aspiring musicians the chance to broadcast their music videos nationwide. Application details can be found HERE.  

Dro Carey has become one of the first musicians to be signed by new Melbourne-based record label Soothsayer. His new EP Dark Zoo is due on 20th of May 2016.
