The Prodigy are touring Australia.
I honestly never thought I’d be writing that sentence again. The iconic, genre-less group last toured Australia just weeks before Keith Flint passed away in March 2019. With only Maxim, Liam and their keyboardist Leeroy left, it didn’t seem likely to see The Prodigy hit the stage again.
And yet they are continuing that legacy of snub-nosed rave music despite Flint’s absence. The Prodigy have been touring once again for some time now, but it seemed unlikely they would stretch their tour around the world like it used to be.
Handsome Tours and Astral People have made good sense in bringing The Prodigy out again. Whether it’s the final time we see them on our shores or not remains to be seen, but one thing I’m sure of is that we’re not just going to get a concert, we’re going to get an experience.
I know it’s odd to put The Prodigy and Coldplay in the same sentence but these are two bands I feel offer much more than just live music when you see them live.
Having been at this game for 17 years now, I’ve seen just about everyone I want to live. When I say The Prodigy offers an experience unlike any other live band in the world, I’m not exaggerating.
Unlike Coldplay, it’s not a garishly optimistic spectacle with everything but the kitchen sink. The Prodigy don’t need that. All they need is Maxim’s commanding growl gliding over anthems like “Firestarter” and “Spitfire” while Liam and Leeroy build a soundscape so immense, intense and powerful that your utmost energy is mandatory.
Aside from a few bands like Muse and Rage Against the Machine, these are some of the most intense mosh pits I’ve been in. Not “grossly disrespectful Travis Scott fans intense, but “some of the most fun you’ll have in your life” intense.
If you’ve never seen them live before, you’re in for a treat. If you have, you know exactly what you’re in store for.
While all the first of two Sydney shows at Hordern Pavilion (13th February) have already sold out, The Prodigy have now added a second show on the 14th. I hear it’s selling quite well.
Given the cost of living crisis, most people are delaying their purchases when it comes to concerts so I’d imagine more tickets will be scooped up in the coming weeks. I’m posting this as a PSA because I would hate for anyone, especially someone who hasn’t seen them before, to miss out. As they say, LFG.
