Six-foot frontwoman Emily Lubitz with her flaming red hair and a voice-to-drown-in calls out as guitarist Jesse Lubitz thumps up dust from the floor of the stage. Imagine Edith Piaf in the body of Mrs Jessica Rabbit, wandering through a landscape of suburban fairy tales and electric static clouds. The drums rumble, the organ whirrs and up over the top of everything floats Alex Burkoy’s achingly beautiful violin.
Since their early days as Australian folk darlings, Melbourne brother-and-sister duo Tinpan Orange have evolved into a stunningly original musical force. Still evident is the lush songcraft and lyrical depth for which they are renowned, but with their new single, ‘Barcelona’ (from their forthcoming album produced by Steve Schram – The Cat Empire, The Vasco Era, Little Birdy), the landscape in which the songs are set has shifted. “Adding Bamboos drummer Danny Farrugia and Harry Angus on keys has been a revelation,” says Jesse “We’re loving the scope and drive of the bigger sound”.
Tinpan Orange are hitting the road with the new line-up for springtime shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle. A favourite at festivals all over Australia with a rapidly growing fanbase (for the last two years running they’ve sold more CDs & merch than any other band at Woodford Festival) a Tinpan Orange show is not to be missed!
Barcelona: “A song about thieves, domesticity and how happiness is fleeting. It’s melancholy, even though it doesn’t sound it,” says Emily. Written by Emily Lubitz| Vocals – Emily Lubitz | Mandolin – Alex Burkoy | Piano – Harry Angus | Guitar – Jesse Lubitz | Drums – Danny Farrugia | Produced by Steven Schram.
