Dharawal singer-songwriter Aodhan released his latest single earlier this month. “Drive”, written in collaboration with his musical hero Josh Pyke, follows a hugely promising debut year for the award-winning fifteen year old.
Produced by JP Fung, Aodhan began writing “Drive” in 2018. Back then he envisioned it as an indie rock/pop song, but the song remained unfinished for quite a while. That is until he got the chance to work on it with Pyke as part of APRA Songmakers and the Triple J Unearthed High Indigenous Initiative.
According to Aodhan, the new single “is a song about the complexities of teenage emotions and behaviours and how they often shift from one to another. I took inspiration from a friend of mine who does really quite well in school but also wants to rebel and date ‘bad boys’”.
“Drive” has more of a ‘pop’ sensibility compared to some of Aodhan’s previous singles. Though, no single is quite the same as the last, with Aodhan flitting between genres. “Drive”, at least, is bright, upbeat and is quite the bop, with a broad appeal. Aodhan, may only be fifteen, but the ideas and motifs behind “Drive” are universal. Teenagers aren’t alone in changing their behaviours based on their audience.
