Rising Sydney emcee Yawdoesitall hooks up with guest vocalist Maina Doe for new single “Armadillo”.
Though early days for the rapper, with previous single “Get It” turning heads on the local scene earlier this year, the new cut is a sharp image of a young artist steady proving himself more than ready to rise through the ranks of Australia’s hip hop scene.
Though it’s not trying to do much but be a relaxing, after-hours love song, “Armadillo” recalls the seamless marriage of rap and R&B that dominated that radio waves back in the noughties, showcasing a slick LL Cool J-meets-Stormzy style as Yaw goes back and forth with Maina on a conversational tip.
Impressively, the two collaborators weren’t even in the studio together, and yet sound so perfectly in-sync, crafting a silky vibe that importantly feels sincere enough to distinguish it from the flavour-of-the-year sounds of current Australian hip hop.
