It was a beautifully balmy Tuesday evening at The Drive for Troye Sivan‘s Something to Give Each Other Adelaide stopover. The Drive as a venue has come a long way since it was Memorial Drive back in the day, hosting the likes of Rod Stewart and Midnight Oil. Since the Adelaide Oval modernisation, the Drive’s subsequent upgrade has made this venue an all-weather indoor / outdoor venue, hosting the likes of Tom Jones, and perfect for the likes of a show such as this. The generous GA area in front of the stage gives the fans a chance to be up and close, whilst the raised seats on the sides and rear of the venue allow a decent view of the stage.
Support act for the tour, Sydney based musician Nick Ward showcased his debut album House With the Blue Door. His Indie pop rock combined with a taste of hip-hop appealed to the assembled audience. The depth of maturity in his songwriting defies his young age, and he holds himself well whilst delivering heartfelt songs. His emotion shows just below the surface of his seemingly light pop songs. His band of two guitarists and a drummer kept the songs alive. Nick Ward is a musician that we will see much more of in the future.
The stark stage was set for the arrival of Troye Sivan. Vertical shafts of light punctuated the silhouettes of the backup dancers, posing, vogue style. “Got Me Started” fills the stadium as Troye launches out onto stage. You may remember this song from a SNL skit with Timothee Chalamet flashing the trademark red underpants. “What’s the Time Where You Are?” follows, as the dancing becomes more sensual and erotic. The lighting is electric and creates that nightclub feel. The dancers surround Troye, taut, tight and scantily clad.
With several costume changes, an interactive lighting rig including screening live visuals from stage and slow songs such as “Can’t Go Back Baby” punctuated with the vibrant “Silly”, both from the new album, the show as a whole always kept something new up its sleeve. With a nod to the recent US tour with Charli XCX, Troye covered two of her songs, “1999” and “Talk Talk”.
The encore songs of “Honey” and “Rush” had the whole stadium dancing in their seats, although to be fair, everyone was up dancing from the start of the show. The whole show had an infectious nightclub good-time feel. A truly stellar performance.
