Video Feature: The Truth About Money in Australian Music revealed in new Documentary.

“In some ways it’s better to take the money from a brand (than a record label)… because you don’t have to pay the money back”. “We’ve done the whole having no money thing, and it’s not romantic”. “I’m not going to feel like a sell out until I’ve stopped driving my Mum’s Yaris”.

How do bands survive in today’s digital age? What does it mean to “sell out”? A new 10 minute documentary – The Truth About Money in Music – from Director Dan Graetz has emerged this week, talking to Australian musicians asking them these very questions. The responses are honest and the short film that results is a much watch for anyone who appreciates music – and in particular, the plight of the everyday musician.

The documentary features appearances from Kate Miller-Heidke, James from Violent Soho, The Cairos, Martin of Purple Sneakers, Remi, KLP and more. It has been made possible through one such brand who has been supporting music in Australia, Jack Daniels, and the film, which you can watch in full below, is the first in their Future Legends series. Learn more about it after the clip!

Over the next 12 months, Jack Daniel’s is set to support and showcase burgeoning talent through a series of unique music projects built around real ideas from real talent and real fans.

Dan Graetz, founder of Graetzmedia and director of the film said of the project, “When Jack Daniel’s showed interest in supporting creative music-related projects, I figured I’d go for broke…so I pitched this documentary around musicians, brands and honesty. It was great they liked it and even better that they gave me the freedom to stay true to the concept. This is the result.”

A host of other projects in the pipeline are yet to be announced but will see Jack Daniel’s collaborate with the likes of Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke, Sable, Motorik, The Griswolds, The Cairos and more to facilitate new music experiences which push creative buttons and boundaries.

Jack Daniel’s has a rich musical history and they know legendary music moments come from exploring the fresh, new and different. Working with the most interesting artists and creatives from around the country, Jack Daniel’s is encouraging trailblazers and raw talent to think outside the box.
