Sunshine Coast alt-rock trio Wifecult have today shared their new single “Hold It Down” and announced their forthcoming project Kindness in Clarity, an EP, out 9 June. Featuring the 2022 single “Wearing Thin”, the EP will be their first collection of songs since the debut album When All is Said and Done in 2020.
Wifecult is comprised of guitarist/vocalist Jarith Hughes (previously of The Almost), drummer Brad Vander Lugt (La Dispute) and bassist/vocalist Joey Keating (previously of Sunbleached). The local legends will also be supporting Ocean Grove at the two Queensland shows of their Bored of the City regional tour later this month with Deez Nuts and Bloom. Get your tickets HERE.
“Hold It Down” is carried by muted surf riffs, syncopated grooves and passionate vocals with catchy hooks in a nostalgic yet different approach. The provocative lyrics offer support to listeners struggling with depression whilst speaking from personal experience.
“Depression is a vulnerable subject, at times cheapened and worn out by our sterile societal approach to handle it, or the overuse of ‘mental health’ vocabulary thrown around in daily conversations,” explains Hughes.
“In its depths, this song is about watching a loved one truly struggle, lost in orbit, for a long time. Wishing I could pull them out of the dark, but still at times being there myself. It’s trying to balance compassion and empathy with practical efforts to walk through it with them. It’s not the blind leading the blind. Sometimes it takes someone who knows, by your side to ride it out together.”
