Sydney Opera House announced the winner of the global animation competition, held as part of the Graphic 2011 festival of storytelling, animation and music. The $20, 000 prize was awarded to the ZZZ Collective for their film Run Amok. Their winning film can be viewed on Sydney Opera House Graphic YouTube Channel http://www.youtube.com/sohcompetitions
The award was presented and the winning film screened before Gotye’s final, sold-out Graphic festival performance on Sunday night in the Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House.
The Graphic Animation competition took place via three elimination rounds on the dedicated Graphic YouTube Channel. Entrants were required to create a 3 x 30 second animations based on the theme “escape”, included a soundtrack supplied by Gotye, incorporate a ‘card’ and something that had to ‘revolve’.
The rounds were voted by the public, with the final winner picked by a panel of judges including Animal Logic CEO and producer, Zareh Nalbandian, Graphic co-curator Jordan Verzar, James Hackett (Hackett Films), Gabriel Clark, and Gotye.
The second annual Graphic Animation competition attracted 51 entries from animators living in 7 countries and illustrated a diverse range of animation styles – from storyboard comic through to stop-motion and 3D. The second annual Graphic festival was a great success with over 7000 tickets sold to 18 events over the 2-day festival. 52% of Graphic attendees had never been to an event at Sydney Opera House before and 10% visited from interstate.
