Slowly but surely, the Marvel franchise is making its way into Disney Parks around the world. Later this year, an Iron Man attraction will be the first cab off the ranks, debuting at Hong Kong Disneyland. This weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, the first US based attraction was revealed, and somewhat surprisingly it’s based around the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, rather than one of the more established brands like Thor or even The Incredible Hulk.
The ride will transform the existing The Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror ride – a long time favourite – at the California Adventure park, which sits next door to the original Disneyland in Anaheim, California. It’s due to open in Summer 2017, with the original Tower of Terror ride set to close at the start of the year. The park promises not to close down the much loved attraction without some fanfare.
The ride “will anchor a broader universe of Super Heroes that will grow over time at Disney California Adventure park”, so don’t expect this to be the last Marvel attraction that you see at this park, or others. Here’s a video about the attraction, followed by a description of the ride from Disney and Marvel:
“Deep inside his fortress-like collection, the mysterious Taneleer Tivan (aka The Collector) is displaying his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. They are trapped in customized display cases, suspended over a vast abyss. Unbeknownst to their unscrupulous captor, the intrepid Rocket has escaped and is enlisting the Collector’s VIP guests for help. Guests board a gantry lift, which launches them into a chaotic and hilarious adventure as they join Rocket in an attempt to break his fellow Guardians out of captivity.”
“This exciting new presence will transform the structure currently housing The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror into an epic new adventure, enhancing the breathtaking free fall sensation with all-new visual and audio effects to create a variety of ride experiences. Guests will experience multiple random, unique ride profiles in which the rise and fall of the gantry lift will rock to the beat of music inspired by the film’s popular soundtrack.”
