“Equality Needs You”: Annual New York City Pride Celebration kicks off on June 19

Equality Needs You is the theme of the 2016 New York City Pride celebration, which will be held from the 19th to the 26th of June at various events and venues across the city’s five boroughs. LGBT rights have come a long way in recent years, but as Chris Frederick, Managing Director of NYC Pride, notes, the theme of the event “serves as a reminder of the continuing fight for full equality and the effect a single individual can have on their world”.

New York has celebrated LGBT liberation since the first pride march in 1970, and the city remains an important location for the pride movement. New York has been selected to host WorldPride in 2019, an event which marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots — a pivotal moment in the liberation movement.

“New York City embraces LGBT visitors year-round”, says Fred Dixon, president and CEO of NYC & Company, “but NYC’s Pride celebration is a particularly exciting time to be in the City”.

The celebration will include the NYC Pride Rally on June 24, The March, which is the largest pride march in the country, on June 26, Fantasy on June 24 at The Diamond Horseshoe, for which the theme is “Neon”, Teaze, an event exclusively for women on June 25, and PrideFest, the annual LGBT street fair on June 26.
