Five new Broadway shows to see in New York City

New York City’s famed Broadway Collection isn’t slowing down for 2020, with five new productions set to open throughout the year.

From a musical based on cult comedy Mrs. Doubtfire, to an ambitious show tracking the creative process and indelible work of Michael Jackson, these five are well worth paying attention to for those planning a trip to the Big Apple this year. Mark these opening dates down on that itinerary.

Six

Opening Date: 12th March 2020
Where: Brooks Atkinson Theatre

Although Sydney-based Aussies can currently catch Six at Sydney Opera House, the hit UK original musical, about the six wives of Henry VIII, is kicking off its run in NYC this March.

Five hundreds years of historical heartbreak is remixed into a modern pop concert celebrating female empowerment. If reviews are anything to go by, you can expect a lot of confetti and all-ages dancing sprinkled with history. It didn’t take the West End by storm for nothing.

Where: Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre

Stephen Sondheim’s legendary comedy musical will be reimagined as it returns to Broadway in March with lead roles from Patti LuPone and Katrina Lenk. The new production of this beloved tale switches things up significantly as it follows single 35-year-old Bobbie, whose friends can’t stop poking around her life.

Previews begin as early as March 2nd so make sure you’re poking around for tickets and more information HERE.

Diana: A True Musical Story

Opening Date: 31st March 2020
Where: Longacre Theatre

Highly anticipated, this true musical story will bring to life the timeless story of Princess Diana and her rise to cultural phenomenon before her untimely death. Written by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan, and directed by Christopher Ashley with choreography by Kelly Devine, there’s a lot to be excited about as this show kicks off in Longacre Theatre at the end of March.

Mrs. Doubtfire

Opening Date: 5th April 2020
Where: Stephen Sondheim Theatre

Beloved for being one of Robbin Williams’ most iconic roles, Mrs. Doubtfire is one of the most endearing cult comedies of all time. Now, the 1993 film has been turned into a modern musical and it comes straight from a sold-out, record breaking run at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre to NYC’s Stephen Sondheim Theatre.

Expect a lot of laughs as struggling actor Daniel Hillard (played by Rob McClure) disguises himself as Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire to stay in his children’s lives after losing custody in a messy divorce.
