For the third year in a row, Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, Scotland is offering Australian artists something pretty darn unique with their annual “Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Prize”. Open from now until June 30th of this year William Grant & Sons are on the look out to award one very (and we mean very) lucky artist a unique residency valued at $21,000, where they will work and live for three months at the iconic distillery in 2018.
The competition casts a pretty big net, opening up the prize to any art medium, including but not limited to print, photography, animation, performance and installation. The winning artist will then get to use their three-month stay to create work taking inspiration from the location, history, heritage, people and craftmanship of the Glenfiddich Distillery. It’s also safe to assume that they’ll be constantly fueled with top quality whisky.
Finalists will be announced in August, but not before an exhibition for the five finalist’s – held along with a Glenfiddich pop-up bar – will take place at Sydney Contemporary, which is that incredible international art fair hosted by Carriageworks in September (7-10).
Andy Fairgrive, the eccentric curator of Artist in Residence, will once again have final say over the judgement after it has gone through a panel that includes art advisor Mark Hughes, Sherman Contemporary Arts Foundation Director Dr. Gene Sherman, and the inimitable Rachel Griffiths. Fairgrive will then also mentor the winning artist and help them bring their work to life.
Last year’s winner was whisky-loving artist Stanislava Pinchuk who grew from her roots in grafitti into an artist who maps landscapes with mediums such as pin-hole drawings, sonic recordings, photographs and textiles. She’ll be doing such when she begins her residency this year.
