Petersham pub The White Cockatoo has gone through a substantial revamp by new hospitality group Goodtime Hospitality – co-owned by entrepreneur James Bodel and Locky Paech (ex The Norfolk; The Forresters). Now know as West Village, the conveniently located venue is a blend of local pub familiarity and modern design with an acute attention to detail, style, and design.
Sam Thomson (ex-Catalina) has joined the team and worked with Paech to create a menu working in both small and large share plates alongside a generous selection of salads, mains, and sides. Thomson will make use of NSW ethically-farmed meat and speciality produce from local organic markets as well as produce like house-made ferments, pickles, relishes, and sauces, where possible. This approach results in dishes like Kimchi Poutine ($14) with spring onion, melted cheese, and crème fraiche, Blue Swimmer Crab Roll ($12) with avocado and celery, and a massive Seafood Platter ($60 or 2/$110 for 4) including Tempura prawns, poached prawns, salt and pepper calamari, natural oysters, hot smoked trout, scallop ceviche, crab claws, house-made sauces including sweet chilli, tartare, seafood and wasabi mayo.
Separate to the dining menu will be one exclusively for bar food, bringing in all the staples like Fish and Chips ($22) and a Cheeseburger ($18). There will also be rotating ‘burger of the day’ specials alongside ‘sandwich of the day’ and ‘curry of the day’.
In terms of drinks, the wine menu has been curated by Andrew Jamieson Wine Merchants with a focus on NSW wines, served up next to a range of cocktails including Negroni on tap. Craft beer will also be a big focus of the bar.
While the venue is open now, there is still much to come, including a pub-cafe style sub-brand of the group named Patio, which will be located in the venue’s courtyard with breakfast from 7-11am, after which it will double as the pub’s courtyard for lunch and dinner.
