Hotel Review: Executive King Lake Room at the Hotel Pullman (Albert Park, Melbourne)

I now understand why the Hotel Pullman in the inner south Melbourne suburb of Albert Park would be highly desirable around Grand Prix time. Situated on Queens Road, the hotel overlooks the famed race track (as well as the Albert Park Lake) perfectly.

If you’re a traveller making your way to the Hotel Pullman via public transport, as I was, it’s an easy tram ride up St. Kilda road and a quick five minute walk from the Moubray St/St Kilda Rd stop. The area itself is quiet enough if you’re looking to not be directly in Melbourne’s CBD, though the tram ride in is quick as well, so you’re not waiting long to be back in the centre of it all.

I arrived slightly earlier than the stipulated check-in time, but the friendly staff at the Pullman ensured that I wasn’t waiting long at all before being directed to my room in the ‘Pullman Tower’ – one of their Executive King Lake Rooms on the ninth floor. The interior is spacious and the first thing you notice is the sprawling view from what is a stunning viewpoint. Along with the views of the track, the park and lake, there is a great view of the Melbourne city skyline just off to the right, which paints a gorgeous picture by night.

The King bed is massive, dubbed the ‘Pullman platform bed’, is situated so the guest can wake up to those aforementioned views on the right, while having a perfect view of the TV off to the left as well. If you experience back issues, the mattress offers great support – I slept like a log. There are also black out curtains in the room to ensure the perfect environment if you’re a light sleeper.

Not having been in my room for much longer than 20 minutes, I was provided with a complimentary dessert on behalf of the hotel, which of course, was accepted with much delight. Hello, chocolate!

The bathroom is, like main living area, incredibly accommodating and spacious. A large shower with two operational shower heads gives a luxurious spa-like experience, while the bathtub which is separate from the shower, is large enough for a comfortable soak. The two sinks offers more room and functionality and the feature of the little things like emery boards, face wipes and q-tips was a little added bonus on top of the fragranced complimentary shampoos, conditioners, body lotions and shower gels.

There is a large living area in the Executive King Lake Room, which is perfect for couples travelling, individuals hosting guests and small families on the go together. The lounge in the room fits the decor excellently and even though it’s a generous size, the room still feels incredibly spacious to move about it. With a large desk next to the bed as well, the room offers anything a professional or casual traveller could want. WiFi is available for an extra cost, but it is affordable.

The location is great for travel to the CBD and St. Kilda and for all sorts of travellers. Evidently a choice hotel for businesses holding conventions or meetings in Melbourne, the Hotel Pullman offers a great atmosphere for corporate events as well as quick trips in to the city, as I was doing. You can’t really argue with that view, especially as your munching down on three different types of Lindt chocolate.
