The DoubleTree by Hilton on Darwin’s Esplanade offers excellent views of the ocean, is located brilliantly behind the city’s main drag of Mitchell Street and offers travellers a great stay, regardless of whether you’re in Darwin on holiday or business. Offering a range of guest rooms and suites to suit the trip, the hotel was once the old Holiday Inn (for those of you who know Darwin) and as the DoubleTree brand continues to expand within the Hilton’s already well-established reputation, their move into the Northern Territory has proven to be a clever one indeed.
Upon check in, the staff are friendly (especially great if you’re arriving off a red-eye flight) and cap off the experience with a warm cookie on arrival. It’s a little thing, yes, but it’s the little things that count and add to an experience that makes the visitor feel at home. The lobby area is spacious, taking in a restaurant and business centre, with a huge pool area just outside as well – catering to the visitors from down south to a tee, the pool is a major drawcard.
The design and decor of the hotel itself hasn’t changed much from when it used to be the Holiday Inn (the last time I stayed on this particular premises was back in 2007), but it’s remained modern and classically slick. The hotel is also next door to the Darwin Entertainment Centre and is part of its complex that is also home to shops and restaurants, so I wasn’t expecting it to be a different building completely to that I remembered.
The King Studio Loft is just one of a few suites available to book at the DoubleTree Esplanade. The room is spacious, a split level loft that features its own lounge area with guest bathroom/powder room and full bathroom on the upper floor. The lounge area doesn’t scream luxury, but there is still a sizeable TV and room to move around and accommodate a number of guests for sure. The usual amenities (mini-bar, WiFi) are all provided, while the bathroom amenities in particular are plentiful.
