With a description promising a “slightly hazy, summer smasher of a beer with a full blown dank hop nose and flavour, courtesy of some late addition hop hash”, the Dunies Lager sounds like the perfect liquid to pour into your shoe and skull on a scorching Sydney day. What’s Dunies Lager you ask? Oh it’s just a collaboration from Newtown icons Young Henrys and Brissy lads Dune Rats, releasing ahead of the band’s forthcoming 11-date tour. It’s the result of a cheeky bet made by the Young Henrys crew who promised Dune Rats they’d let them toil around in their beer labs if the lads’ new album hit number one on the ARIA charts. It did; they did.
“It’s awesome when friends of friends come into the fold, become new friends, drink beers together…and then decide to make a beer together”, said YH founder Oscar McMahon. “The Dunies lads are legit, hardworking, honest and don’t take themselves too seriously. We see eye to eye with them, love their excitement for everything they do and wanted to do something fun to share that excitement with a few more people”.
That excitement will come in can form, as after the necessary launch party on Sunday 26th February, the collaboration beer becomes available for purchase in six packs of 330ml tinnies for an RRP of $24.99. The labels of each can have even been designed by Lee McConnell, the very same who is responsible for the Dune Rats’ latest album cover.
The launch party is promising to be an extra loose affair at Sydney’s sweaty subterranean Cliffdive, featuring a Ratbags Records line-up and some DJs. Entry is free but it’ll be capped at 200 people. You can RSVP via Eventbrite, until the allocation is exhausted, and there will also be free tickets on the door at Cliffdive from 7pm. First in best dressed!
Dunies Lager seems to cram a lot of flavour into one can, using Mosaic, Citra, El Dorado and Azacca to spice things up. Under the high standards from Young Henrys we’re expecting this one to live up to the quality of The Kids Will Know it’s Bullshit.
