A weekend in the Kampi Villas: A secluded retreat in Nusa Dua, far from Bali’s tourist crowds

Kampi Villas was unlike anywhere I’ve stayed before – secluded, serene, and surrounded by nature. Perched on Kampial High Hill on the outskirts of Nusa Dua, offering sweeping views of the Indian Ocean, it really is a perfect backdrop for anyone seeking privacy and escape from the everyday.

The compound has six private villas, three upper and three lower. I was in an upper villa named Andhakara, featuring three spacious bedrooms that felt more like private retreats than just rooms. Each room was comfortable and serene, and the sense of being away from everything was truly refreshing.

The bathrooms were huge, with the master having a beautiful freestanding tub. I loved the genius of the sliding door that doubled as either the shower or toilet door, depending on which way it slid. The private pool was tucked away on the bottom level so you could swim with complete abandon, knowing no one could see what you were or weren’t wearing.

Every morning, the staff brought breakfast directly to the villa, where I ate at the kitchen table while watching the paragliders in the distance zooming over the Indian Ocean. It was nice to start the day without any rush, enjoying fresh, delicious food and beautiful views in my private little haven.

However, there are a few things to note. While the villa’s seclusion is part of its charm, it does come with its challenges. It’s not close to the main hub of cafes or restaurants, so if you’re planning to eat out, you either need to BYO or rely on a Gojek/Grab to take you into Nusa Dua. The remote location sometimes makes getting rides a bit tricky. While I had no issues ordering in most of the time, there was one occasion where a ride didn’t show up at all, which was a bit frustrating.

The drive to Kampi Villas also has its quirks. The road leading up to the villa is not paved and can be a bit bumpy, especially if you’re on a bike, as the area is still developing. That sense of being on the outskirts gives the place a rugged, untouched feel. That said, if you’re looking to be away from the hustle and bustle, it’s worth the slight inconvenience.

All in all, it’s is a perfect spot for those seeking privacy, luxury, and refreshing ocean views, but it’s not the most convenient if you want quick access to restaurants or nightlife. It’s a place to unwind, disconnect, and immerse yourself in peace. If that’s what you’re after, it’s the perfect sanctuary.
