Kiin is the newest Asian restaurant in the heart of Adelaide

Kiin is a new modern-Asian style restaurant that has just opened in the heart of Adelaide. The name is Thai for “eat” and is the creation of Ben Bertei and David Wickwar, who have over fifty years of hospitality experience between them. Located at the front of the Arts Theatre in Angus Street, Kiin Bar and Restaurant is a breath of fresh air in this central arts precinct.

The décor is modern and fresh, with bespoke wooden shelving showing off traditional Thai implements. The cooking area is open and airy, with time-honoured cooking methods employed to create a modern fusion style of food.

Staff are friendly and capable, and the inviting layout encourages a relaxed attitude from the moment you step through the door. A combination of original features on the ceiling and the crisp new décor is an example of how the whole concept fits together.

This is not a chicken fried rice style restaurant. Instead, we have prawn and lychee pop sticks, red curry cheeseburgers and oysters with coconut, chilli and lime. In keeping with the theme, the recommended menu is a tasting menu, which can be large or small depending on your appetite.

The extensive wine list includes local and imported beers, a huge range of white and red wines, spirits and cocktails. It’s worth trying something adventurous to go with the food.

The space is well laid out, with a dedicated flexible functions area near the rear of the restaurant. Options include standing buffet-style or sit-down dinners.

This restaurant feels lively, honest and adventurous and is sure to become a hit with the theatre crowd and inner-city workers. It has that wow factor that you can feel the moment that you walk through the front doors.

If you’re looking for something new in Asian-fusion cooking with a modern fresh perspective, Kiin is the place to be.
