Aline Viravouth and Marcel Nantharath, the team behind Carlton’s popular Nasi Lemak House, have now opened their new 30-seater venue Merah in Northcote. With a focus on Malaysian street food, the lunch and dinner restaurant which opened late last year will highlight the many diverse flavours coming from the South-East Asian country.
All the staples are on the menu, switched up with modern flourishes as all dishes are made daily using locally sourced produce. Expect the usual suspects like char kuay teow, chilli crab, beef rendang and nasi lemak alongside vegan-friendly dishes like vegan BBQ sliders with grilled mushrooms and sambal, Java jungle curry – laksa made with a plant-based broth and soba noodles – and signature Merah fried chicken. Local craft beers and organic wines are available to help wash it all down.
The Malaysian BBQ dishes are driven by an imported Malaysian grill, keeping things nice and traditional in-line with the charcoal they use in the country. It’s the pride of the kitchen along with Aline’s house-made sambal, which is made from a four-generation old family recipe and will also be offered for purchase.
“I’m a huge chilli fan and have worked tirelessly over the years to perfect my recipe”, offered Aline. “We always have people asking to buy it at NL House, so I’m excited to see it in jars and ready for customers to take home”.
