Sydney brewery Rocks Brewing Co. really nailed flavour-rich beers last year when they started experimenting with tastes like passionfruit, lychee, cherry, and pomegranate, with their Passion Fruit Wheat Beer going on to become one of their most popular limited edition brews. The team are obviously keen to keep this ball rolling on 2016, just recently releasing a Blueberry Wheat Beer, using the same base wheat beer as the Passion Fruit hit, but this time adding some seasonal blueberries for a very vibrant, summer-appropriate, and dangerously drinkable release.
At just 4.4% ABV, the new brew is light and obviously designed towards a ‘sessionable’ beverage, forming it’s base with four different kinds of hops – Super Alpha, Mandarina Bavaria, Nelson Sauvin, and NZ Pacific Gem – with 95% wheat and 5% rye. The bright, zesty colour of the beer may indicate excessive sweetness but the palate is incredibly well balanced, not at all as sweet as one would think but still well connected with the strong fruity scent, which is mostly thanks to the late addition of Pacific Gem hops. It’s fresh and the mid-palate is full of delicious, soft blueberry tartness before a smooth, creamy finish.
The release had not been bottled but you can find this in the three pubs owned and operated by Rocks Brewing Co. The Blueberry Wheat Beer is available at The Brewery Bar in Alexandria, the Lord Raglan Hotel in Redfern, and Harts Pub in The Rocks. Prices start from $8.50 a schooner and $10.50 a pint.
