On the Shelf: Sesión Mocha Tequila

Winning a Gold Medal and two Silver Medals so early in the game is a big deal for Australian owned Tequila Sesión, who only launched around six months ago. It was their Sesión Mocha Tequila that earned them the Gold (Sesión Blanco and Reposado won Silver) in the influential San Fransisco World Spirits Competition and since then interest has understandably buzzed around this finely crafted spirit.

Sourced only from one of the most respected agave farms in Mexico, Tierra de Agaves, Sesión was named for the sessionable feel of the Tequila, premium in design with a focus on sipping at a social gathering rather than shotting at a grungy pub, a stigma those who make Tequila have been keen on getting rif of for years now.

The 100% Blue Agave Tequila welcomes a more accessible spin the authentic spirit, which is why the focus is more on flavoured Tequila to separate Sesión from similar products. It’s a wonder that they have achieved such a balance without the use of any additional sugars, extracts, or processing, rather drawing on only fine, natural ingredients to help the small batch process along. It’s appropriately luxurious, and the Mocha is perhaps the best example of this premium aesthetic.

Blanco Tequila serves as the base for this Mocha expression, bringing in creamy dark chocolate and cold brew coffee flavour liquor to create what is a lighter spirit than the Reposado or Blanco expressions. Sitting at 35% ABV, the Mocha has a robust nose of dark roasted coffee beans with sugary biscuits and crisp chocolate fondant. It’s easy to tell that this is for those who like things a bit sweeter, evident from the straight-forward palate of full-flavoured dark chocolate, cold brew coffee, some dark fruits, and a tiny hint of molasses, all consistent from front to back, giving a very pleasurable finish that’s entirely expected from the minute the bottle top is screwed off. The consistency in the flavour also speaks highly of the benefits of sourcing the agave from only one farm and one distillery.

The Mocha may be too big a departure from a traditional Tequila for some people, but mixologists and those who like dessert-style spirits should be jumping all over this one. You can only pick Sesión Tequilas up from Vintage Cellars, First Choice, and Qantas epiQure. RRP is $90. For more information head to the official website HERE.
