More than 8,000 love stories and break up mementos have been sourced by the eternally playful folk behind QT Hotels & Resorts for a temporary museum dedicated to relationship relics of the past. Twisting the idea of Valentine’s Day, QT Gold Coast will turn into “Heartbreak Hotel” from 1st to 21st February, showcasing a pop-up exhibition dedicated completely to both love and disappointment.
Anyone on the Gold Coast next month can head on into the sun-kissed hotel between the above dates for a collection boiled down from those thousands of entries, focused on showcasing the full emotional range of trinkets that represent love found, lost, and purged.
“Everyone has their own relationship or break up story,” explained QT Gold Coast GM Steven Oakley. “We’ve gone through thousands of entries and donations to curate a collection that will make you laugh, cry and cringe”.
The appeal might lie somewhere between Post Secret and straight up voyeurism, but stepping into the soured love lives of these anonymous donors just may be the best way to spend Valentine’s Day in the glistening coastal city – at least this side of Surfer’s, while the other half of Goldie romance over acai bowls down in Burleigh. Few things can strengthen a relationship like learning from other’s mistakes.
And mistakes shall be plentiful throughout the pop-up exhibition. We’re talking scorched wedding dresses, stolen PlayStations, and even a Kangaroo scrotum’s purse – all with wild stories behind the items as they sit splayed out in an irreverent display tracking the various ways people have expressed heartbreak (and, it seems, bitterness).
The exhibition costs an easy $10pp and comes with a drink voucher, so its basically free. More information can be found here.
