Review: Santoni (new breakfast menu 2016) – Hawthorn (Melbourne)

Nestled on a bustling corner in metropolitan Hawthorne lies Santoni, a pizzeria known for it’s beautiful dough and laid back atmosphere. Having just released a brand new breakfast menu equipped with a mouth watering breakfast pizza, I went down to see if this lunch/dinner restaurant could add ‘trendy brunch cafe’ to its long list of accomplishments.

Upon walking through the doors we were led up the stairs to a rooftop terrace with sweeping views of Glenferrie Road and a peak at the distant city skyline. The sun was shining, umbrellas were up, and it truly was the perfect Autumn day to kick back and relax with some scrumptious brunch. Iced coffees were on the agenda, a refreshing welcome from the hot sun. Alcohol is also served on the rooftop, so it seemed only fitting that a Corona be a nice compliment whilst lounging back and enjoying the view. We perused the new menu and absolutely could not go past The Breakfast Pizza ($22). Equipped with fried egg, baby spinach, mushrooms, chorizo, cheese and tomato, it was truly a delicious take on a traditional all-day Australian breakfast, and the dough was absolutely divine!

Next we opted for the polenta chips, mushroom trifolate, poached egg and parmesan dish ($18). The mushrooms were fresh and not overcooked, and the polenta chips crunched in your mouth with satisfaction. The eggs were perfectly poached and oozed out to create a beautiful combination with the flavours of parmesan. Another winning dish.

What’s truly great about Santoni’s is the rooftop. You don’t often get breakfast cafe’s around Hawthorne that offer such fantastic birds eye views. I can see long afternoons spent on the rooftop, lounging around with friends, enjoying the sunshine, and being spoiled for choice when it comes to good, hearty Italian food. For the sweet tooth amongst us there is the french toast with whipped ricotta, organic honey and toasted almond flakes ($16), and for the meat lover there is the thyme glazed bacon steak with asparagus, poached egg, corn and jalapeño salsa ($18). They also offer a fantastic lunch menu, and of course their renowned dinner menu. Also you absolutely cannot go past the hugely popular Mick Adams Cheeky Charlie Burger, with soft shell crab, coriander, pickled cucumber, radish, spanish onion, chill jam, iceberg lettuce and aoili; this burger is a must, and suits for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

If you feel like a relaxing morning in the sun make Santoni’s your new breakfast hot spot. You will not be disappointed by the food and instead be tantalised by the unique twist put on your breakfast favourites. So grab your friends, head upstairs, and enjoy the views of our beautiful city. The only problem is, you won’t want to leave!
