Sydney’s batch of niche food festivals may just hit its peak this weekend as, just six days after the city saw its first dedicated fried chicken festival, we are getting a damn doughnut festival, and some of the best are on board.
By best we’re talking the likes of: Doughnut Time, My Donut Box, Woah Nelly Bakes, Brewtown Newtown, Donut Papi, Grumpy Donuts, Shortstop and Nutie. These are names which have inspired the resurgence of the doughnut as one of the foremost food trends in Australia, showing us how inventive one can be with the classic circular fried food.
The festival, Day of the Doughnut, has been organised by the same minds behind Melbourne’s Flour Market Day, tightening their focus on a particular kind of baked good with help from those who have proved time and time again that they are ahead of the curve.
Gates shall be flooded when the event kicks off at 1-74 Commonwealth Street in Surry Hills on Saturday 30th July, but early riser tickets are being sold now via Eventbrite for $11.44 (allowing ticket holders entry 30 minutes before general admission). Those who don’t hold an early-entry ticket can enter for $2 on the door, with kids under twelve admitted for free.
**UPDATE**
While we expect that there will be more than a few exclusives on hand for the event, so far our hearts and minds have be won by what My Donut Box are planning: the Marshmallow Dream Cronut. They’ve created these bad boys just for the day – a crispy cronut rolled in sugar, cut in half, and then filled with whipped marshmallow fluff and rainbow sprinkles, then topped with nutella, roasted hazelnuts, and finished with a rainbow lollypop.
